Dieks and I have been working really hard at engaging with a toy. He plays with vigor, is getting the out, but still wants to run when given the toy. Yesterday I separated/sprained my shoulder and I'm now in a sling I don't want to stop his progress, but trying to play tug last night after a little pain killer cocktail meant slooow reaction time on my part and crappy, sloppy one-handed presentations of the tug. He handled them well, still engaged nicely and didn't even get my hand, but
I don't want to screw it up for him since he's learning so well.
This a.m. we worked on a sit and watch for food (iffy at best as food isnt that interesting to him since he has discovered real tug) and watching me before I toss a ball. He doesn't bring the ball back so I had to have a whole pile of them for this. Should I continue with any of these or just give him a break for who knows how long?
I broke my left elbow july 31. I am just getting back into some action.
The dogs, especialy my crazy one made it through the summer.
We went back to agility this week and nothing was lost. My only hard part was to keep the excercise level high for Harley. Our run in the wood got dangerous as he as no self preservation. He run twice into trees and got staples for that.
I got creative using one hand only for the tug and handing reward.
I have to say he is even better. I was in so much pain the the out had to be fast and light on the leash mean light on the leash.
Thanks for the suggestions guys! Glad to hear you are doing better Ariane! I guess I just feel a sense of urgency to get him to another level before he finds his new home- kind of give him more of a leg up in the OB with toy reward to attract the kind of home I want for him.
We have been working on a version of scatter tracking...I walk outside to a crazy dog, he completes the watch command, I mark and throw a handful of kibble-like treats that scatter on the patio and grass, he finds every last one, then we repeat It's slow paced, but it's doing something. The 1 handed tug took it's toll onces the meds wore off, so that's out for this week at least
Ana, I know nothing about tracking, but I'm hoping for a S&R home for him, so I don't think I'll go there. I'd probably mess something important up knowing me
