Huh. I thought that dog was computer animated. The dog just looked strange in the movie- like something was off.
At least this older dog will find a good home. He's one of the few lucky ones.

He should have gotten a percentage from those movies/movie he was in. I bet $500k would keep him living well until the day he dies.
Then whatever was left over could be given to the German Shepherd Rescue.

What is so sad to is that the only reason we ard hearing about this is because the dog is famous. Weekly I had breeders ( I use the tearm loosely ) and trainers bring their dogs to the shelter to find a "retirement home". I doubt very much this had to do with money but I could be wronge. Maybe he has a gambling problem . Not surprising that the dogs have health problems. Another trigger for coming to a shelter or rescue. We had a 15 year old cattle dog with bladder cancer get turned in for money issues. When will people get a clue?

I'm all for rescues. I managed one for years. I really do have issues with some of the criteria rescues have for potential adopters, and I know it's been talked about before.
What'd'ya want to bet that the 10, and 13yr old GSD's are GREAT with kids, and HAPPY to have 4 hours of quiet peaceful time while the owners are gone? (ok, I may be exaggerating some, but really... the rescues requirement is that the dogs may not be left alone for more then 4 hours? Seriously?) It's just silly, IMO. They are not even considering TONS of homes that would be fantastic because of silly rules like that.

I agree -- I wish they wouldn't use the "blanket" type of criteria when looking for homes for dogs. Each dog is different, and each home is different. I know that with limited resources, it's difficult, but this should be about what's best for the dogs, not about the check marks on a form.
I saw this on FaceBook and it broke my heart. I am hoping the old guys get to stay together, and find a wonderful home. I would guess that the vet care is what the owner can't afford...
On a slightly related note, I was channel surfing the other day and came upon one of those court TV shows and the case was about a dog that woke up from a botched Euth. I don't know what state it was in, but the cost of the euth was $2000 (NOT including disposal fees). Seriously? Does it REALLY cost that much in some states? My last Euth cost under $150 - here it goes by the weight of the dog. Heck, my horse was only $135 and that included the farm call.
If this is the case, and Euths really do cost that much, I am beginning to understand why so many senior dogs are being taken to shelters... that doesn't make it right, but I think it would be hard for a lot of folks to come up with that kind of cash on short notice - especially in this economy....

I think you can easily find a vet to do humane service for under $125. My Tera had a diagnostic done, $465, and was diagnosed as incurable and degrading rapidly. I decided to let her go, and the vet did it at no additional charge (except for disposal). He said there would have been a nominal charge if she had not already been checked in, but under the circumstances, charged me no more.
$2000 is a scam, trying to get over on the defendant, which is why it went to court instead of settled out-of-court.

I once found a badly injured cat on the road; none of "my" vets were working that day. Cheapest place I could find wanted $250.00 not counting disposal! For a stray cat!!! I had to take him home and shoot him.

I thought so too, but then the second vet's invoice (the one that actually did the successful Euth) was $2000 as well. And that was without any testing - the dog was old and it's hips had degenerated so that it couldn't walk. Names and addresses were blurred out on the invoices so I couldn't tell where they were from.

Well, if not a scam, then that's just taking advantage. In no way, shape or form can one vet have that much associated cost, while another vet can do it for next to nothing.
