When you toss the toy for the dog, is it for the dog to end the exercise and break position? How does the toy being tossed to the dog/infront of the dog work?
I like to say the command FREE each time I start to play after dog is in a position. I also learned the dog to stay in position while I throw the ball and on the command FREE he can go get it. This way you don´t get the dog anticipating and get out of stand.
So in this case as soon as I throw the bal I say FREE. And I throw the bal away from him bal bouncing on the ground.
Sorry Vince, We are still working on nice attention heeling, Which I must say is 200% better now. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I am my dogs' problem, but I already knew this. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Since I am part of the reason Ed wrote that article, I am keeping my mouth shut this time <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Vince is correct in his statment. These are the most popular ways to teach the down
A popular German trainer, and World Champion winner, teaches his dog the motion commands with food or ball like Vince said, and has them do them after 4 paces. Once this becomes imprinted and a bit of a habit, he then goes further then the three paces, giving a little pressure when the dog starts to lag,sit or down as this is what has happenended so far.The dog will anticipate the sit or down, and do it fast as it is kinda of a release from the stress. It looks good and is effective.
I thnk it depends on the dog, your ability to train, and a bit of luck. Some dogs hate to down, so it is a challange and takes time.
