Hi Everyone. I am so happy with my new 11 week old GSD puppy Schatzi...she's a real gem. She's already sitting at the door and house training has been a breeze. I'm using an ex-pen and it's been a life (and wall/sofa/shoes/etc.) saver.
I've just started working more with her in the day and I've been taking her "lunch" out with me and doing some easy work like sit and come and then rewarding her with a small handful of her kibble - just wondering if that's "ok" or if I'm setting myself up for her expecting it all the time? Some days I don't (or can't) do it and she eats inside from a dish or my hand.
Almost every meal my dog has ever had was used as a training session! I think it is an essential part of the "nothing in life is free" concept.
I feed raw and cut up her meat into tiny pieces for marker rewards and we end on an upnote with her meaty bone as a final reward.
Since my dog is small, I feel that there is no way I could do as much training as i do if I fed her additional treats... she only eats four ounces of food a day!
On the occasions when I don't have the time or energy for a training session, I still have her do some sits, downs, stands, come fronts etc. before I put her bowl down. Does she come to expect it? I'm not sure what you meant by that, but yes, she expects food as a reward for training, and she expects training before she gets food ... and that's a good thing IMO
Thanks Cindy. Your dog is spunky and adorable. I like how you put that dogs expect that food is a reward for training and they expect training before they eat. I too have my dogs sit and wait until I give the OK to eat every day, every meal.
I'll be interested to hear how others on the board weigh in, but it seism to be working well for me and my pup and makes her mid-day meal fun. She will be going down to two meals soon and I will then be using smaller training treats as usual then...
