Hi everyone,
I'm new so sorry if this has been addressed before.
I'm at a loss about my 7 month old puppy's poops. She's never had more than 1 month of consistent, harder poops. I've had her checked for parasites, which when she was younger she did have giardia. I've done some research and still can't find anything like what she's going through.
After eating something foreign (I'm assuming, I have my parents help watch her and it happened on their watch), I decided to fast her and start on chicken and rice. On chicken and rice, she was doing great with normal poop. But only pooping like once a day.
However, I integrated the kibble back in and now that she's primarily on kibble, things are going back to runny poop again.
Sorry this isn't a fun topic, but I need help.

Did you know that giardia often recurs?
Tell us what the soft poop is like. Is it formed at all, or more like a pile? Is it ever liquid, or more like pudding? Is it dark, or pale?
How long did you do the diarrhea diet?

Yes I have heard that giardia often recurs. Even though her poop was normal on chicken and rice, could she still have giardia?
In the morning it is formed, like a milk chocolate color, cleans up easy. Then as the day progresses, the color remains the same but texture changes steadily. Usually ending up like soft serve and unformed, almost impossible to clean up with a doggie bag. A few times it has been liquidy (like soup), same color though.
I did the diet for about a week, and now I'm transitioning off. Everything seemed fine until today.

Yes.
How long was she on the diarrhea diet before the poop normalized?
When was the giardia diagnosed and treated, and what was the med? How long did the poop stay normal after that protocol? Was the poop darker then (immediately after the med protocol) than it is now?
(We have many very knowledgeable giardia/diarrhea folks here, BTW; the reason I keep replying is because from Friday afternoon through Sunday night, it's often slow on dog boards while folks are out training. Hang in there if replies come slowly. )

Ok good to know, thanks.
Hmm probably 48 hours.
It was treated months ago with Panacur, probably when she was 3 months old. I honestly can't remember if the poop was darker, sorry. I would say it stayed normal for about a month. Although, I honestly do not know what "normal" is anymore.
No worries! I'm happy to receive a response at all, much less quickly! I appreciate your help!

Need a little bit more info -
What kind of dog do you have? (pictures are great! We love pictures!)
What kind of kibble do you feed?
How much kibble do you feed?
How long have you been having problems with her poops?
Have you been on this kibble the whole time?
From what I've read so far I'd be doing two things - A recheck for giardia, and a look at her kibble for an alergic reaction to some ingredient. JMO!
Cassy & Leo enjoying a nap.

Personally, I'd currently skip the recheck for Giardia. IMO, it's pretty dang certain she'd still have it, and chances are good that it could come out negative on a test.
Treat for Giardia, with metronidazole, and check poop again after the Met. tx is complete. Then you'll have to recheck stools again in 3-4 weeks.
Giardia is a REAL pain in the butt- I've fought it many time in my current dog, and in past dogs as well. The Pacific NorthWest has more then out fair share of damp, wet places to harbor the ugly little microorganism.

A GSD (west line). I'll post pictures soon!
What kind of kibble do you feed?
Canidae grain free
How much kibble do you feed?
4 cups for 50lb dog
How long have you been having problems with her poops?
since I brought her home at 8 weeks. They are just really inconsistent.
Have you been on this kibble the whole time?
No. She started on some cheap brand, then switched to TOTW, then vet suggested Canidae because it has less potato than TOTW which might be causing diarrhea. She has had bad poop on all of these, although sometimes right after I switch I see an improvement. I figured this ruled out anything food related.
I just picked up Panacur, shoot haha. Metronidazole is only available through the vet? Any ideas on where it got picked up? Should I sanitize the yard or something?
I should mention she is on fish oil, vit E (200) and vit C (1k) if it makes any difference.

Yes I'm tight on finances (grad student) so any tests that aren't *critical* I'd like to avoid.

That 4 cups is split into 2 feedings, right?
4 cups for a 50lb dog in one feeding would be pretty hard on the pups digestion.
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |
