My 2 yr old male has been dropping his head while heeling. This all started once we got his rountine down. He was doing his whole routine w/o reward. I thought he was just bored with doing the same thing over and over. Nope. Even after mixing things up he will not keep eye contact . Unless I have a ball or food. I tried some of the methods in the COMP HEELING VIDEO but to no avail! Any suggestions?
I never do the whole routine regularly. We mix it up. Either motion exercises, heeling, dumbbell, etc. to keep the dog from getting bored, plus we have give the dog rewards ALL the time unless it's a trial. Even before the trial, dog gets rewarded just not as much, but will still get treats, toys, etc.
The problem you are refering to can be caused by a number of different factors.
One problem can be a lack of drive or a dog that cannot collect his drive enough to focus on an exersise to get his reward.
You may have not laid a good foundation in teaching the dog to focus.
You may have rewared the dog to often at the same time or rewared him when he was not looking at you.
He may be out of shape. This is sometimes a problem. Alot of dogs, because they get tired quickley, will lose intrest and not perform to the level you expect.
I would refer to the tape that Ed has Training Drive Focus and Grip with Flinks. There is some good information on this video. This video will teach you to get focus with a dog and keep it. You may have to adjust a little depending on your dog, but the basic principle that the training is based on is a great method for teaching focus. Good Luck.
Thanks for the input!! I will give the video a try! All the other videos that I have purchased from Ed have been a great help Oh yeah, I don't think that is about being in shape. He swims 3 time a week and goes for runs 3 time a week. Not to mention the ball retrieval. That's more like a sprint for him. Thanks again, its off to video land!!
