Today, had no help, had to doctor a heifer. So she had to go into the chute, and I had to be at the headgate to catch her. So the DOG had to push her. She did NOT want to go.
HE DID IT.
It took about 30 minutes, but he got her in there.
PRETTY GOOD FOR A LITTLE DOG!!!!!
I enjoy your stories of life on the farm, Betty. While I've never owned a dog who had a real job, I have a great appreciation for them, and I can imagine the sense of satisfaction both you and Pinker must have felt today.
Fantastic!
Herding is one thing but it takes a pretty good dog to push stock through a chute. LOTS of herding dogs won't have anything to do with the tight quarters.
I had to set it up for him. I had the heifer alone in the barn, all other cows outside.
Then I put the DOG in the barn, thru another door-- the only way for him to come out of the barn now was thru the chute. He'd bark at her feet for awhile, get her started, then she'd turn back and he'd come down the chute, I had to send him back about 10 times..She was getting feisty. Basically I kept sending him back thru the chute to get her until finally he made her come, neither of them were getting out of there unless she came first.
For awhile he was in there eating spilled feed which was annoying, but it allowed the cow to settle down some.
Kind of fun!
Betty, you have proven what can be accomplished with lots of dedication to training & commitment to your dog.
I can remember what a hard start you both had. It is wonderful to hear these stories of how far you both have come together. Cudos to both of you! Great job!
