Tell the breeder what you are looking for in a dog and what your plans are for it (a particular sport?) and let the breeder pick which pup matches your needs best. IMO

Hi Brandon and welcome to the board!
Since you are at the stage where you are asking that question the best bet would be to find a breeder that you trust and allow them to guide you to the puppy that would be the best fit.
Do you have a breeder yet? If not and if you give us your location I'm sure that there are a few people have some suggestions on breeders in your area.

It's me again......LOL
I have a little more time and wanted to address your "best of the litter."
In my opinion best or pick of the litter is misleading. What would be the best pick for you and your situation could be a disaster in another placement and vice versa.
It is more of a matching of the pup with a new owner then a best or pick of the litter thing.
For instance with the litter on the ground I have deposit on 2 females, one is for someone very experienced with working dogs that is looking to do training and the other is for someone that is looking for an active family dog and companion. What would be the pick or best dog for the experienced home is not one that would word work well with the family. Both situations call for two totally different dogs and each would be the best in their home.
Does that make any sense? I'm kind of rambling here.....
But regardless of what your plans are for the pup you want to pick a confident pup that shows good nerve.
Betty is exactly right. Find your breeder first and then explain exactly what you want in a dog and what you want the dog for. Be honest. If you tell them you want a Schutzhund prospect, but know you really won't commit to that, you're going to end up with too much dog and neither you, your family OR the dog is going to be happy. A good breeder spends time with each litter and knows each puppies strong and weak points. Explain as fully as you can your training capability level, your time to devote to it and your lifestyle and let the breeder match the pup to you.
