Very rarely have I ever seen Malinois on Craigslist here in McAllen but every once in a while one pops up... I called this guy just cause I was curious only to find that this guy says he can't keep the pup cause he needs to much exercise and had no idea that they needed a job and that they have a 10 month old baby and that she is pregnant again... on and on. Why is it that all this wasn't thought about when he already had the kid and his wife was pregnant and he was at work all the time? Not the first I guess... http://mcallen.en.craigslist.org/pet/2818806496.html
I've seen a Malinois in the shelter there...supposedly a police washout? it was tattooed and everything and they told me an officer brought it in...don't know if that's usual but there is a breeder down there now so they are popping up more.
Let's face it. people tend to be impulse buyers and stupid to boot. Personally, I love Mals but won't ever own one because I know it's not the right breed for me. But most people don't do any research before buying a dog. They just get one that looks good to them or buy one based on some movie or tv show.
Do police generally dump dogs that don't work out in shelters? I hope not.

I certainly can't speak for all law enforcement programs, but that is not my experience. A purchased dog is usually returned to the vendor. A dog that was donated or obtained from a rescue, shelter or dog pound, in my program, has always been adopted to a good home.

well I dont know what to think of that particular department to be honest. one of the dog handlers lived on my street and had a young maliois that was supposed to be waiting to be trained. I watched the dog endlessly pace and bark in a 6x10 kennel for a year and never got worked. I asked about him and the guy said I could take him out and walk him if I wanted but I declined because I didnt want to be involved the departments dog in case something went wrong. good thing I didnt because the dog ended up getting stolen out of the kennel...
