I find it amusing (and annoying)- the things I hear daily about dogs, so I thought it'd be fun if we shared the silly, uniformed and downright dumb things we've heard about dogs this week
1. Me: Mom, stop feeding Tanner so much at night. He's getting back rolls! Mom: He can't help it. He's an emotional eater!
2. "I can't adopt a large dog because they don't like being in the house." Huh???
3. "My dog is really friendly, he just bites everyone when he meets them to make sure they know he's the boss in room. Isn't that riiight my wittle baby booooy!" Ugh.
4. "I want a little dog that looks like a chihuaha, but doesn't shed, is tough enough to withstand my unruley kids without acting up, houstrained, and loves to play fetch for hours on end. Like a Lab but tiny. Do they make tea cup Labs?"
5. "I let my dog indiscriminately breed because her puppies are so cute they'll MAKE money for the HS" Uh huh. You bet crazy lady
I think I could go on and on, but I'll stop before I write the ones that make me really, really angry! Got any good ones this week?

On discussing this man's refusal to train his dog and his belief that fixing him will magically fix all his issues.:
Trainer: "Well fixing him won't solve the issues but since you say he runs away a lot that may prevent some unwanted litters from cropping up in the neighborhood"
Owner: "Well I don't want to fix him really because I want to breed him" *pointing to badly bred herding breed trying to chew the leash to escape*
Trainer: "But you don't want to dump a lot of puppies into the humane society. There are a lot of dogs there already'
Owner: "Well none like him"
Trainer: *head desk*
Of my cattle dog:
"Is that a coyote? He's pretty!"
Of the largest beagle I've seen in real life:
"Well I just can't not feed him. He's just always hungry!"
"I can't read this. It has silent E's." |

I used to volunteer quite alot at the local HS, I took one dog out (i forget the breed) who came up the leash after me a couple of times. I took him back in to management to inform them of the problem and was told that he "didnt mean anything by it" like I didnt know what I was talking about, and they put him right back in his cage to be handled by anybody.
This particular hs has to put down something like 40,000 a year so plenty of good dogs being put down for this one to be adopted out. Oh and they wont adopt out pitbulls or pit types no matter what the temperment but this dog was apparently "stable".
I had someone insist that my obviously purebred shepherd was a chocolate lab on one occasion and a wolf hybrid on another.
Also, i mentioned this somewhere else but I had a trainer try to convince me take their class by telling me that my dog was begging while we were working engagement because the dog ignored her and didnt break eye contact with me.That did make me proud.

My favorite is "I can't get a big dog because I don't have a fenced in yard for him to play in all day." (Neither do I and I have several big dogs but I walk, train and exercise them. When I put mine in the run, they potty and look at me with what are we doing now look?)
Can't get a big dog because it won't like being in the house irks me.
This one totally got me when Balto was a puppy.
Neighbor: You should papertrain that puppy because he's too little to have to come out in the cold to go potty.
Me: He's fine as he's wearing a warm coat and being outside for 10 minutes to go potty every couple of hours won't hurt him. Besides no dog is going to get in the habit of pottying in my house.
Neighbor walks off shaking head, mumbling about heartless puppy owners who don't like piddle pads.

My dog is stubborn.
My dog blows me off when I ask him/her to do something.
Mt dog is Stupid.
My dog is hard headed.
My dog doesn't listen when I tell him/her what I want him/her to do.
My dog will only eat "whatever".
My dog is a con artist.
My dog can spell.
My dog knows when he/she did something wrong but he/she still does it to spiite me.
My dog yadda, yadda, yadda.
This could go on forever.
The vast majority of the time all these dogs are confused. They haven't been taught correctly and chances are the leadership in the pack is lacking. that "pack" can be as simple as just you and your dog.
Plain and simple, dogs do what is successful for them and they avoid what isn't. If the command is clear, the reward is high enough, the correction (if needed)is fair and firm, there is no reason for a dog to be any of the above.

A black lab ran across three yards to come and menace me while I was walking our Mal, Bailey. I put myself between the two dogs and kept it at bay until the owner finally caught up. My dog barked once and tried to lunge at the dog as it was barking but I was able to correct her and get her to sit quietly. The other owner then proceeded to remark how I should do something with my dog because she was so aggressive. Clueless.

Met a fellow standing in his front yard on a walk several months ago. I nodded to acknowledge his presence as Daisy and I passed. Then he says, "Better not come any closer; my dog doesn't like yours."
Umm yeah... Excuse me? My dog is on a 6' leash and we are sticking to the very public sidewalk. His dog is nowhere to be seen (better be behind that stockade fence) and I about chewing my tongue in half to remain polite as it is. This is the same guy who walks his dog up and down my street at least once a day and his 70+ pound Malamute is never on a leash. He allows his dog to run through my front yard to snarl and bark at my dog in my 100% fenced back yard. Of course he is usually about a half-block away when this happens, but even when he is close enough to do something about it never a half-hearted "No," "Come," or even "Sorry" passes his lips.
This dog is NOT friendly. I saw him get into a scuffle with a polite and under control Shepherd a few doors down and this owner has shown zero evidence that he cares. Woe betide that husky if they ever come by when I am out in the front yard with my dogs/kids. Poor dog.
