To have patience. Not every dog learns at the same speed...some faster & some slower..but we all can learn new things...even if we have a little 'age' on us.
To have kind words & a kind touch. Even when we may, in your eyes, not always do the 'right' thing. We are trying to do so. Sometimes we fall a bit short.
Consistancy, dogs don't seem to understand gray areas everything seems to be black and white to them.
For example, They don't get why is okay if they jump on you when you're wearing your old blue jeans but you yell at them when they jump on you while you're wearing your nicest outfit or on grandma.
Fix me a burger while you're at it. Fix me a burger while you're at it. Fix me a burger while you're at it. Fix me a burger while you're at it. Fix me a burger while you're at it. Fix me a burger while you're at it. Fix me a burger while you're at it. Fix me a burger while you're at it. Fix me a burger while you're at it. Fix me a burger while you're at it.
And......
Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee. Throw the frisbee.
All dogs want and "need" good leadership. Without that you have the spoiled, uncontrolled, neurotic monsters. With it you have whatever you want from the dog.
Kaiser - "I know what it looks like Mama, and I know I have fluff from the shredded bed round my chops, but I PROMISE it was Sugar"
Sugar - "I know its me you caught shredding that bank statement, but it honestly WAS Kaiser
Bonnie - "well Hootie wasn't that bothered about his food tonight, so I thought waste not want not"
Hootie - "Just because I am not a real guts, does NOT mean she can finish my bowl!"
All four - "Is that SERIOUSLY all we are getting to eat tonight? I know what you think we are getting the right amount, but honestly, we could easily eat more, and we don't care if you are cold tired and hungry, we want out for a yomp, you know you are gonna, so stop pretending, suck it up like you always do and take us the hell out already!"
I think dogs would like humans to understand that they sense the physical world around them in very different ways than we do. Their sense of smell is far greater and more discerning than ours. We humans tend to use our eyes first to take in the world around us, and we may get frustrated with a dog that doesn't want to get his nose off the ground, but the dog is probably thinking, "What's wrong with you? Can't you "SEE" that?"
Hi Mara,
I recently wrote an article for the British Carriage Dog Society Newsletter as though it were written by Lusi, our Dalmatian..... Article for BCDS Newsletter (by Lusi the Dalmatian)
The article stories how Lusi became the first BCDS member. It was interesting to write because I had to put myself in Lusi's shoes..I mean paws!

I think dogs would like us to remember that they are not funny looking little people.
Dogs try very hard to understand and adapt to human ways--they pick up an amazing amount of information from our tone of voice, our body language, out behavior patterns, etc. But human ways of thinking and behaving are NOT natural to dogs. They have their own ways. And I think dogs like it when we make an effort to meet them half-way.
I think they probably also want us to know they don't really get that whole dressing up in a silly costume at Halloween thing.
eta: And that the smell of that dead thing or the poop they rolled in was far nicer (in their opinion) than the flowery fragrance of the shampoo you just used on them.
