I've been looking over Leerburg.com articles/q&as for a while now, but this is my first time venturing into the forums. I've owned dogs all my life, mostly siberian huskies, shepherd mixes and my current dog, which is an unknown, but best guess is malamute or husky/rottie mix. My current guy, Diesel, is currently wrapping up Obedience 1 at TCOTC in Minneapolis and hopefully should be progressing onto more obedience and some agility. After years of owning huskies, including some serious sled-dog line huskies for hobby sled dog racing, it's so great to have a dog that can really engage and enjoy training! I'm also hoping to get a working breed puppy sometime in the next year and would love to get into doing some ringsport work, which has been a dream of mine. Now that I'm done with college, it's time to get going! I'm currently in the process of prepping myself for a new puppy - looking at breeders (which is a whole new world since I've always gotten dogs from rescues), watching some leerburg/ellis DVDs (puppy from 8 weeks to 8 months, marker, power of tug, power of food), reading everything I can get my hand on about schutz/mondio, and attempting to set up lessons with a trainer who works protection dogs in the hopes of tightening up my handler skills and establish a working relationship with someone who can help guide me in the process. I'm ALWAYS open to any advice and can't wait to start looking around the forums and gaining some insight into what I'm getting into!
We really are having great and unexpected weather. I still can't get over having to wipe off muddy/slushy dog paws in January and February but I'm definitely not complaining!
Sounds like you are going to be a very prepared new owner of a working dog!
I hope so! The only thing I worry about is making it more complicated than it needs to be by overthinking everything and ending up with a crazy little beastie! At least I'll have the Leerburg forums to turn to in case that should happen
