Awhile ago people sent cards to get Nitro's law to pass.

"Nitro's Law HB 108 passed the Criminal Justice Committee on September 21, 2011, it passed in the House February 15, 2012 now we go to the Senate Committee then the Senate must vote and finally off to the Governor. The bill may expire before all of this get's done."

I hope this bill won't expire! I am also glad they got it to pass in the criminal justice committee. Its one more step to stopping animal abuse.

I'm with you, Cassie. I hope the bill will get the needed votes from the Ohio senate and be signed into law by the governor. What a horrific incident that was. And, sadly, similar things happen all too frequently, in all states.

What happened to Nitro and those other dogs will be something that will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Cassie thanks for posting this. I agree with you Betty, what happened to Nitro and the other dogs haunts me as well.
I really hope this passes, with flying colors.
It is time to put an end to senseless acts of outright cruelty.

I have a lot of respect for Nitro's "mom" and the core group of people that have worked so hard and so long on this.

To do that to a living creature and it to not even be considered a felony defies belief.

NITRO’S LAW HAS BEEN SIGNED BY THE GOVERNOR OF OHIO

OHIO – On Sunday, June 30, 2013 Ohio Governor John R. Kasich signed what will be known forever as Nitro’s Law, the very first “first offense” felony of the fifth degree on the books in the State of Ohio for companion animal abuse. Nitro’s Law will become law via the Ohio Revised Code in 90 days and is specifically relating to kennel owners, operators and employees. The bill introduced earlier this year had been voted through the House of Representatives in a unanimous vote on May 15, 2013. Senate leaders did what appeared to be an injustice by splitting the bill up over the past few weeks and putting most of it in the budget bill. State Representatives Ronald Gerberry and Cheryl Grossman, along with the other 18 sponsors of HB90 and the Nitro Foundation/Nitro’s Ohio Army volunteers, worked diligently to get the amendment to include the major provisions that covered the same type of atrocities as what HB90 covered. On Thursday, June 27, 2013 the budget bill passed the Senate in a 21-11 vote then it passed through the House of Representatives with a 51-43 vote.

Christina Oranges, Nitro family member said today: “I want to thank all the Legislators and their aides who worked so hard to get it right and special thanks to the Nitro Foundation followers / Nitro’s Ohio Army Members who continued to call or write the legislators to say We Want Nitro’s Law.” She continued: “We aren’t done yet, more work needs to be done and we will continue with “Wanted Wednesday” (a campaign that Nitro Foundation started earlier this year for the unsolved tragedies and cold cases of animal abuse in Ohio) because together we can make a difference.”

“We will continue with court case rallies, walks and parades, but an extraordinary thank you goes to the Nitro’s Ohio Army Members who have worked events across this state. It wasn’t often easy to be committed to take that much time from your personal lives to do what was right. For that we are so grateful” said Mike Smeck, a Nitro Foundation Ohio Leader. “Also, we will continue to pursue HB57 (know as Nitro’s Law sister bill) that will require an individual to file proof of successful completion of training with the county recorder prior to being appointed as a humane society agent.” On a side note, HB57 passed unanimously out of the House of Representatives Wednesday, June 26, 2013 and will now move to the Senate.

Shawna Seifert, a Nitro Foundation Ohio Leader has said: “We anticipated when this day came, the response from the Nitro Foundation followers / Nitro’s Ohio Army Members would be wonderful; however, it has been overwhelming as congratulations are coming in from around the world. It’s been many years, as Nitro’s Law was originally introduced as HB70 in the 128th General Assembly, then again as HB108 in the 129th and this time as HB90 in the 130th, the road has been long and trying with each General Assembly running for 2 years, but we did it. We ALL did it and thanks go to everyone who participated. Social Media really can work.”

Nitro’s human parents, Liz Raab and Tom Siesto had this to say: “Finally, after all these years of losing Nitro so horrifically in 2008, Nitro and his kennel mates will be able rest in peace. Their deaths are not in vain, this law will make a huge difference and will be built upon to include more and more for the protection of our companion animals; our family members. We can’t begin to thank all the people who helped to make this happen. Thank you to all the people who joined our grassroots effort and never gave up, all who stuck with us through thick and thin. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.”
