What do you do when you encounter a stray (when your full up with dogs)? There was a stray at the laundry mat today that was just bones and he was so sweet. I just hate meeting the sweet ones cause they are the ones I want to take home... Just can't take on any more animals right now... I have tried calling shelters but there thing is you have to pay like $100 to give them to the shelter.

I bring them to our local animal control.... There is no fee for bringing in a stray. Our animal control officer works closely with a lot of rescues and has a pretty good adoption rate for a small, under-funded shelter.
Then I usually go home feeling like a complete heel and will shed a couple of tears.
It seems that McAllen is just not the place to be cause I have asked and called places and there seems to be no-very little animal control here.
We are living in an industrial area behind a factory and there are tons of strays around here. They are mostly around the dumpsters looking for food and very few of them will come to me. This one may just have been dumped. I bought a bag of dog food and dumped it out for him there, just to do something...
Have you tried calling animal control? I know they are taken to the Palm Valley Animal Center and animal control officers in Edinburg know my family by sight and are really good about coming to pick up strays. even better if you get them and have them on a leash before they come. http://pvaconline.com/

I probably would have done the same thing. For the same reason is why I can't go near shelters, I would put myself in financial ruin trying to adopt and/or buy food/supplies/medical for every dog in the shelter. It brings me to tears every time.
I normally don't feel so bad but this guy is just a young pup and so sweet. He was there again today and I left more food for him. That is a kill shelter though and I don't think they have a great adoption rate... I was going to help there but I went once and was so mad at the place that I didn't go back. I went and found a no kill shelter instead. They might take him but their adoption rate is not great either so they probably won't have room. He also has some medical issues, not big ones but possibly mange.
BTW that pup is SO cute! have you posted pics on here that I haven't seen?
While I hate the thought of an animal being put to sleep, consider that death is often preferable to life and a slow death on the street. Especially for a pup that has health issues and is already starving. And even if the pup survives on the street, it will likely continue to populate the area with more strays...
While it may be a sad thought/end, it may be the kindest thing to take the pup to the shelter. It will have a chance for adoption, and even if not, it will have a few nights of a full tummy and a warmer place to sleep.

I have to add my support for this. As awful, as sad, as heartbreaking as it is, there are plenty of times in this life when there is no good solution .... only weighing two not-good ones to determine which might be kinder.
I'm not saying there may not be better options or that this is the time for this one. I'm just saying that there are times when this one isn't the worst.
