For a while now, I have been interested in buying a food dehydrator to make my own all natural dog treats, like jerky etc.
This month WDJ had feature article on this very thing.
The article mentioned the Excalibur brand because it can accommodate nearly 20 pounds of meat at once.
Don't have that brand, but I do have a dehydrated and I love it for making "fruit leather" and other stuff. I have used it to dehydrate meat and it worked really well. For human consumption I prefer my smoker, the jerky from a deyhdrater doesn't have that smoked flavor unless you add some flavoring to it, but for dog treats it works really well, and the dogs don't need that extra stuff added.
You can also do the same thing in your oven with it set to the warm setting. I usually prop the door open just a little since my warm setting is just a little to warm.
Droooll.. I have a smaller dehydrator, a Nesco american harvest with 4 trays.. Love the size of that one. My only concern with having it in the garage, locally, is that the ambient humidity is really freaking high and I worry it could affect the quality of the dehydrated food. I don't imagine Dallas has a lack of humidity - worst case scenario would be running it against a wall in the kitchen and storing outside in a sealed bag when you're not using it.
I have the excaliber just like the one in the picture. Use it for drying apples, bananas. I place it on my kitchen counter and store it in the basement when not in use. Does take a good share of space but always has enough room to dry a large amount of fruit.I run it at night so it's never in the way,it has a timer.
I am pretty sold on getting one. I love the idea of making the dogs treats myself, but also want to do veggies and fruits too.
I really like that the dehydrator doesn't destroy all the nutritional value.
I believe the foods still maintain most of there enzymes too.
Pretty cool stuff! Thanks everyone!
Got a box fan and 2 clean furnace filters? You have a dehydrator.
Got an oven (like Kadi mentioned) you have a dehydrator.
As someone who has owned every kitchen gadget known to man, I say spend your money on a good chef's knife or stick blender. You will use both infinitely more, and you already have a great dehydrator in your kitchen that will hold a ton of food. You can also purchase 2 more racks for in your oven to double your capacity.
I put food dehydrators in the same category as bread makers. You have 2 hands, a counter, and an oven. That's really all you need to make bread far better than that which comes out of a bread maker.
