This post from another thread got me wondering:
See Kristin... s'all good. Right, Teresa?
Funny you say that, people ask me my name and I pronounce it Tressa their reply is one of the following: "Teresa? Thresa, Treasa, Theresa?"
See, I always thought Tresa's name was pronounced "TREE-sa." I'll now think of her correctly as "TRESS-a."
My own name is a subject of much confusion. It's pronounced "Sherry," like the stuff you drink, but I always get "Cherry," like the fruit, or "Sha-REE," like the French would pronounce it. Or, amazingly, I have had people see my name in print and call me Chris. Go figure. I guess they're reading fast, and four of the five letters are the same.
My last name is "GRIS-um," which people are more likely to pronounce correctly now because of a long-running TV series called CSI where the lead character had that last name. But I get Grisham, Grisman, Griffin, or my favorite from one telemarketer, "Hi, Mrs. Gruesome?"
Just wondering if anyone else has had some funny pronunciations of their first or last names, or if some of the members would like to share the correct pronunciation of their first or last names if they seem confusing. For example, Wendy, I would love to know how to pronounce your last name.

Edit reason: corrected spelling of one of the mispronunciations LOL

Like Tresa, I love when folks repeat my name, which I have just said, back to me WRONG. Honest, I do know how to say my own name! Kris-tin. Simple, yes? Not Christine. Not Christian, Not Kristianne and FFS not Kristy.
We won't get started on my married name and the weird pronunciations I've heard there.

Coufal is pronounced like "sioux fall" but I get kofall, koofall, etc. Someone jokingly called my son souffle. lol My husband's uncle told me that in czech it is pronounced So-fall. If I need it spelled correctly I always spell first, pause, then pronounce. If I don't it will be hacked up so badly.

Technically, our last name has a space in it- Vande Weerd, so the intellegent telemarketers read it as two words and ask for Ms. Weerd. It makes my kids laugh so hard. "Mom, they called you weird!" We also get a lot of mail for the "Weerds" and are constantly getting lost at places that have a computer check in because we don't know if they have a space in there or not. Pronouncing it isn't difficult, it sounds exactly as spelled but people still add in extra r's or forget r's when saying it out loud.

I am happy if most english speaking person out of Quebec or the Ottawa region can get my name.
It is very simple Ariane, look at that it is Mariane but with no M, how hard, right! Plase roll the R some and forget about the E at the end, sound much better.
Gauthier, Go-Tee-Hay, there you go easy

Ariane, I'm from N-B and have a hard time not giving a Franco pronunciation to names down here in the US. I get a lot of weird looks from Genevieves, Leblancs and Lamontagnes.

Wow, Tresa... look what we started! This has been eye-opening, as I've been mispronouncing the names of most of these posters, except Kristin and Amy. I will admit, tho, that I did think Amy had a weird last name. I did imagine Tresa as Treesa.
I've seen my name spelled every which way you can imagine, and pronounced more different ways than I can recall. My least favorite pronunciation is D-wayne. A lot of older, more rural types have problems with the Dw sound, so I let a lot of Waynes from them.
I have a brother named Daryl and a close friend named Darrel, so I have been called Darrell alot in my life, once even by my own mom.
I've also been called a few other choice things that I shan't mention here. Call me anything you like; just don't call me after it's over or when it's too late to help.
