A posting in a different section made me wonder what exactly defines a professional dog trainer. Is it a particular school? Certain number of trained dogs produced to do certain things? Peer review? I'm just wondering what y'all think.
Anyone that makes a legitimate living doing whatever is a professional in my books.
Graduating from any dog school with some sort of Master Trainer title can be a very long way from making a living in dog training.
A self taught trainer could still be considered a Professional.
The term professional also has nothing to do with how good a person is either.

Like Bob, I agree that the noun "professional" (as opposed to amateur) usually means "someone who gets paid."
At least, that's the difference to me between a pro and an amateur. The definition of amateur is usually something like "non professional; does not get paid."
But that's JMO.
Certainly people often use the adjective "professional" to mean more.
A professional trainer is one that gets paid. But, imo, it has nothing to do with whether or not the trainer is any good or not.
Going to school MIGHT, depending on the school, make a person a better trainer but it does not make them a professional. Only getting paid does that. If a trainer is not getting paid, he/she is an amateur. And amateur, imho, does not mean the person's not as good as a professional. They might be better than some professionals (or not).
It is an example of what we consider a Military MWD trainer, and the skills he/she must have. FYI, the need for experienced dog trainers is very much needed, with most Jobs i have seen start at $90k
***Disclaimer**** I am in no way endorsing any job or situation, just posting a link with information on the stated topic.
On a good note, the vast inclusion of MWD capabilities in the Government and DHS will ensure that future generations of WL Dogs and IMO help the breeds....
Reading that link John, it looks like something for someone with a very high set of skills, willing to have a huge amount of responsibility, who doesnt care much about money.
I've have seen a few so called professionals who had not made it through novice yet and should not have been training these poor dogs. (wouldn't call it training)
