LOL!! Oh the joys of training a puppy.
And yes, have definitely had them lose focus and find the target much more interesting than anything I was trying to train.
I'd of probably gotten down on my knees, rewarded him for giving it to me and had a party with another "chewable" toy.
The next short session would be with a less enticing "place" object. Have you got a slab of cement or some nails to tack this one down? LOL, just kidding but maybe some carpeted plywood or something.
Have you thought about using something uncomfortable to chew for the "place"? Like maybe a floor mat for a car that has those pokey things on the underside? Not anything that would be over-painful, but just something that discourages chewing on while still being able to hold the place command.

Actually, there are plastic mats that go underneath office chairs which are affordable @ $35, easy to clean and have those spikes (to grip carpet). That might be feasible - once he is accustomed to the area then you could put a comfy on top of it I guarantee he will not want to chew on it, those mothers hurt!
