Does anyone know where Winn Dixie chicken jerky is made? I've tried the brands listed by the FDA, but preferred WD because they are moister and seem fresher, and the list of ingredients is MUCH shorter (chicken breast, potato starch, salt). I suspected that the jerky made in China has a lot of preservatives.
The WD jerky is distributed close to home, but I don't know if that makes any difference.

Connie (or others);
To be clear, these are "Chicken Breast Jerky" treats. They do not have the same dried-out, processed appearance as the brands mentioned by the FDA, which I have tried and discarded in the past. These are not the "Chicken Jerky Strips" that WD had a problem with in 2007. Would preservatives be listed in the ingredients if they were present?
Sent an email inquiry to Mars (only "Contact us" info I could find), but I'm not sure they make the treats. I called Winn Dixie, but all they would say is that any food product made outside of the US would be labeled as such. When I asked "Okay, but where do the ingredients (chicken breasts, potato starch) come from?", I got the same reply; if they were foreign, it would be stated on the package. They would not tell me who the OEM was.
I have been feeding these treats daily for 1.5yrs, and haven't seen any symptoms Of Fanconi's, or any other food-related side effects.
Does anyone have any useful or helpful information?

Email is good. The answer will be in "writing."
Winn Dixie pet food items are made by Doane Pet Care, which is owned by Mars. If they cannot answer you, no one can. If they won't answer you (and I mean better than "if it was part foreign-made, it would say so"), well, I wouldn't buy them.
My own requirement is kinda like WDJ's (for inclusion in their "best foods" lists): secrecy about sources eliminates the item for me. If they can't come right out and say "made in the U.S., 100% from U.S. ingredients," then I want to know why they can't.
PS
Preservatives really have not been causes of big recalls. I'm not saying preservatives are all safe, but the big (and deadly) recalls have not been because of preservatives.
Most of the focus on the kidney- and liver-related deaths connected to jerky treats from China has been on taint possibilities, not preservatives (and in fact, not on anything listed on the label) .... such possibilities as heavy metals, melamine analogs, etc.

None of this is damning (not at all), but it makes me want to get straight answers. "If it was foreign it would say so" isn't a straight answer from a person who actually knows, IMHO.
Absolutely agree!! The reason I came back to this thread, AND the reason I love your advice...info on critical issues needs to be to the point! I was extremely frustrated with the answers I was (or wasn't) getting. Thanks for your advice.
My question about preservatives not only applied to this particular issue, but to diet in general. I tend to avoid preservatives whereever I can. If there are two similar brands or versions of a product, and one has fewer preservatives, I lean toward that product. I feel that too many preservatives can affect the quality and/or taste of food.
FWIW, to be a tad more specific, one article I read indicated that the sources of most of the "tainting" in Chinese foodstocks are agricultural and environmental in nature; entering the foodchain through the use of pesticides, fertilizers, feed supplements, etc, etc.

Connie;
No response from Mars yet. Making me nervous. Thanks for all of your guidance with this issue.
The only thing that has me even hoping they will respond is that I've been happy with this product for over a year, and I would prefer to hear that I have nothing to worry about.
In your opinion, if there was an issue, would I have seen symptoms by now?

Not sure if any of this is new info, but sharing it anyway. I just ran across it.
http://vitals.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/05/22/11798368-nearly-1000-dogs-now-sick-from-jerky-treats-fda-reports-say
"...Three top brands of chicken jerky treats were among those most recently cited by pet owners and veterinarians in complaints of harm, FDA records obtained by msnbc.com showed. They included Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brands produced by Nestle Purina PetCare Co., and Milo’s Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats, produced by the Del Monte Corp..."

"One of the biggest frustrations of pet owners trying to avoid poisoning their dog or cat, is that many pet treat package labels claim the product was made in the U.S., when the reality is one or more ingredients were imported from China. .... On closer inspection of some chicken jerky treats “Made in the U.S.A.,” the small print shows the chicken actually came from China."
"Country of origin labeling laws require only that products be put together here to make the made-in-the-U.S.A. claim. As long as ingredients are cooked, mixed, or otherwise processed once they arrive in the U.S. from China or elsewhere, the food can be legally identified as being made here."
"Please DO NOT BUY OR FEED chicken jerky treats, chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken treats made in China to your pet – and this goes for any treat you aren’t 100 percent sure originated entirely in this country. "
http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2012/06/08/toxic-chicken-pet-food.aspx
Irony:
"Chinese pet owners who can afford to are arranging to import American-made pet food and treats to avoid tainted products made in China. This, while pet owners in the U.S. continue to wait – for nearly 5 years and counting -- for the FDA and retailers to ban potentially deadly China-made chicken jerky dog treats from store shelves. .... At least a dozen pet food manufacturers in the U.S. currently export their products to Hong Kong to meet the demand of well-to-do Chinese pet owners who don’t want to risk giving the family dog or cat food or treats made in their own country."
