I've always believed that the vast majority of untrained dogs will not protect their owner. Some fearful dogs will bite and run... yadda yadda.
Came across this video that is supposed to illustrate this... but not happy with the video - there are too many cuts in it.., clearly edited footage. Also the 'untrained' gsds all look really nervy before anything has happened. Really makes me wonder what has gone on before this was shot.
Somebody is trying to sell dogs and services, I question the wisdom of doing this in a public area
While I am not into protection training, I am interested by it. I saw this video 3 or 4 months ago and thought the exact same thing.
However, I have known of 2 completely untrained dogs who knocked over assailants. They did not bite per se, but kept barking and circling after they knocked over the offender. Who knows?
we have to clearly define "Protection" numerous dogs will bite an intruder and raise hell but the dog is defending "territory" I read ONE case where an untrained dog protected his owner and that is suspect. An American line GSD thwarted a car jacking by biting the perp as he reached in to grab the keys. If you think about it the dog had NO CHOICE but to bite. He had no place to go.
IMO, this video is bogus. It is way too staged and edited to be a valid experiment.
Any dog trained in Schutzhund protection could do what these "trained" dogs did in this video, and there is stil no guarantee that these dogs will protect their owner in the real world. The parts that are cut out are where the handler is giving commands. Granted, in that sense, a protection dog will bite on cue IF the agitator is wearing equipment that the dog associates with protection work. They probably wouldn't bite a real mugger who is not wearing a sleeve or bite suit, or carrying a whip or pistol.
I would run the other way if this trainer approached me trying to sell his services.

Saw this posted on the Belgian Malinois facebook community. It shows a couple different dogs reacting to someone breaking into their owners houses. I thought it was pretty interesting.
