I notice one of her eyes was red earlier in the week. I assumed she scratched it a little while crashing through the bushed on our walk. I took a closer look today and both eyes have a strange redness near the outside of the eyeball.
I'll probably take her into the vet on Tuesday, but in the mean time; can anyone identify what is wrong?
I don't like the look of that. The right eye appears to have free blood in the anterior chamber:the left eye looks almost blistered. It could be inflammatory reaction to trauma, ie/ she's been running thru long grass, but then I'd expect her to have a corneal abrasion, a squinty eye. A dog that's been hit by a car will sometimes have an eye that looks that way (like the right eye, with blood in the "white" of the eye at the lateral margin.)
Has this dog been around any rat poison? Is she sick in any way?
As far as I know Starbuck has not been exposed to any poisons (I don't use any here). She does run through the hills like a nutball and crashes through bushes like it is nothing. I was hoping it was just a scratch.
We went to the Vet today and they think it is Pannus. The vet prescribed Optimmune ® Ophthalmic Ointment. They want to check her again in 2 weeks. I think the plan is to change over to an oral medication after the 2 weeks.
I have not had a chance to research Pannus. It sounds like a common issue for GSDs.
My last GSD had Pannus, but it didn't look anything like that. It was more of a small, cloudy spot in his eyes and occasional irritation around the lids. I don't know if it can manifest itself like in your pictures, however.
One thing I would advise you to do is get a referral from your vet and take Starbuck to an ophthalmologist. You will actually save money in the long run because they will determine what it is the first time.
If it is Pannus, it is an auto-immune condition that will require you to give Starbuck drops/ointment every day for life. It will also require yearly or bi-annual checkups with the ophthalmologist to determine if the current medication choice is being effective and if the dose should be altered.
