We are going to pick up the new puppy tomorrow and I'm not sure if anything has changed in the last couple years with the Flea/Tick products.
I don't remember any of what I read 5 years ago, but I decided Frontline Plus was the product I wanted to use on Starbuck. She never had any reaction to the medication and it did a very good job with the fleas and ticks.
It looks like these are the top choices:
Frontline Plus (repels and kills mosquitoes too)
K9 Advantix II (I think the first version was around last time)
Advantage 2 (I guess this product does not kill ticks)
We didn't get much/any cold weather this winter and Starbuck picked up a bunch of ticks out in the field this year before I started up with the Frontline.
We don't have a cat, so the K9 doesn't worry me at all.

I'm interested in other's opinions/ideas too. I cannot for the life of me stay ahead of the @*#! fleas. I've been using Trifexis this year, but I'm about ready to try something else. (I have a phone consult with the vet tomorrow to talk about this very issue.)
Not getting a true hard freeze in our area last winter has made this the worst year for fleas I have experienced.
I use Frontline Plus along with a natural flea & tick repellent that is a coat conditioner spray.
I have used it for about 8 years when tracking in high grass areas & working PPD work in the woods or just walks or hikes in high tick areas. Also with the mild winter & the higher tick population this year...I even used it this spring when putting my dogs out in the yard as I have acres of woods behind my house. I would just spray them every few days or so.
It is Quantum Herbal Products....natural coat conditioner. It is also marketed these days as 100 natural flea & tick spray. It has worked very well with all my GSDs.
I've used Bio-Spot effectively for the last thirteen years. I prefer topical to internal, and it's the only topical that I ever felt 100% confident with. I may also start using the repellent that Anne recommends, as I'm not crazy about having the fleas actually getting a bite.
I've used both Advantix and Frontline Plus. It seems like the ticks get immune to one after a couple years and I have to rotate. I've gotten similar results from both of them.
Since I recently went through 2 weeks of Doxy for Lymes, I can tell you that Deep Woods Off does NOT work for humans...
I don't know Duane. I minimize the time that my dogs are out in the times that they are out. So I'm not that concerned about that.
It doesn't say anything about them, though. So I'm going to say most likely not.
My dogs also get a garlic suppliment year around & have their whole lives & I believe that this also makes them less tastly to any of the biting insects.
Down here, mosquitos are a bigger problem than ticks, and basically, if you go outside at all, you will encounter them. With topical or internal preventatives, they don't work until the pest bites. Skeeter bites bother Sadie more than any other dog I've had.
I have always used FOOD GRADE Diatomaceous Earth and cedar oil spray on the animals, never any pests on them. I removed a tick from me in March which landed me in the hospital for 5 days, Anaplasmosis. Now I am paranoid and constantly check the dogs for ticks.
