For those of you that do not know, the 4th of July is the day that records the highest number of lost dogs for the entire year ( due to fireworks, etc. ).
Please take the time to do an extra check of your gates and fencing, and just take that extra care to prevent something that you'd regret at a later date......
Thanks Will. Something I never had to worry about but in this 12th year of Thor's fireworks; his anxiety is visible. I'm lucky cause he's stuck to me like glue. But everyone should be aware even if your dog has been fine it doesn't hurt to double check. Take it from me; Thor has been to the Boston Pops fireworks as well as numerous local town displays over his life time and enjoyed them but this year there is a lot of drooling and panting going on even though we are home.

Is the present anxiety because of age? My last GSD was very calm during the noise for much of his life.
But near the end, he was very upset over things that never bothered him; fireworks being one of them. I always wondered why?
FWIW, if your dog has obvious anxiety with fireworks, I'd suggest asking your vet about drugs (just NOT acepromazine) or if they're not too bad trying something like melatonin or L_Theanine
Kipp gets valium during storms and he had one today because he was stressed by the booms. He still doesn't like the noise but instead of panting/quivering "oh my word, what am I supposed to do?" he is able to relax and sleep. I know some people only want to do drugs as a last resort, but I feel that something like this falls under a quality of life. If your dog is clearly stressed by all those explosions that they can't understand and drugs relieve that stress then that is a really good thing IMO.

I would have to say yes since my Vet told me this was not unusual with the senior dogs. My personal thought which is pure conjecture is that his sight and his hearing are becoming impaired and he knows it and his confidence is diminished. It makes me sad because he was always so independent and confident; yet on the other hand I wanted him to look to me for direction and he does now, on his own without reminders or corrections....lol....am I a dog whisperer?
I had a Shih Tzu that was fine with fireworks and thunder until she turned about 8. Then she was a quivering, drooling hot mess!! She even dug under the fence a few times when sudden storms came up and I was at work. SO I ended up putting a hot wire around the fence bottom and watching the weather more closely so I could leave her in if bad weather was expected. However, in Texas those storms can pop up AWFULLY quick!
AS long as we were with her, she was anxious but OK. It was when she was alone that she went berserk.
