Im new to this board and a new trainer. I am thoroughly confused about when to start on the E collar. I have a 3 month old Mal from NVBK line, definitely a hard pup. When I correct him with NO!,PHOEEYYY or OFF(because of his constant nipping and jumping on my 4 little boys)He stops as long as I have the leash in my hand...when I dont.....he is not as responsive. I am currently working on his prey drive twice a day and obedience. Sit, Down and come, I want to train him for ring Sport....and a house pet. I know there is a fine line between the two. So I come to my confusion point here....Should I put a E collar on him and start at a very low level and continue food motivation as I have been doing......Or am I rushing this. I am also worried about killing his drive with No's and corrections. I have always heard that the first 4 months of a dogs life is where most of the imprint for the rest of his life is going to happen. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like you have a nice Mal! I will just tell you what I would do if I had a 3 month old Mal that I was going to do Ring Sport with. I would keep everything positive for the pup and I probably wouldn't give him too many corrections, but if he starts biting hands, just redirect his biting into a toy. If he's tearing your boys up, well then don't let him around your little boys without a leash.......I guess what I'm trying to say is, just let him be a pup and take him to a lot of places and keep everything in his life POSITIVE!! You might consider getting Ed's video titled "Drive, Focus, and Grip"....I think it's a great video for any foundational bitework. Also, take it easy on his obedience, but don't get me wrong you can do obedience, but make it POSITIVE and fun! You want a happy puppy who loves to work.
Thanks for the feedback John.....I do have the dvd you sugested and have been spending twice to three times a day doing Bernards drive work. What is happening is that he rather bite me (eventhough I am not moving much) or bite the leash.....That is where E collar came to mind....I am new to this and certainly I don't want to knock the drive out of my pup by overcorrecting ......but he won't redirect when he decides to bite me or my boys.....unless I yank him with the leash.
