First, I came back from the locker with 500 lbs of meat and in a mind fog handed out RMBs to 3 dogs. All went great for 2 hrs until Pinker decided to bury his bone and then get the pup's bone (pup now = 40 lbs) . I was inside, but evidently the hired man's dog plus pup fell in attacking the Pinker, whom I'm sure deserved it, but it required 5 days of antibiotics and he's sort of cowed now. The hired man had to haul 2 dogs off of him.
Then today, the heifers had escaped, 1000 lb brats feeling good in the fall air. A cow stepped back while being driven up the hill and smashed his little foot.
So he has a metasplint on and is feeling pretty sorry for himself. I bet it hurts like hell. Plus now he can't help with herding for a month + so the pup will take his job.
He's very sad!
I doubt Pinker expected such retalliation for his acts on the other dogs. Hard lesson. Poor Pinker. Nothing like a sore foot to make it a bad day. Life's lessons can be a challenge to overcome.
And 2 days ago he was sprayed by a skunk and had to sleep in the garage overnite.....
With his busted foot, his skunk smell, his pink coat still spotted with dog bite punctures, he's really a pathetic mess.
On the incredibly plus side he allowed me to apply the splint. Only a year ago I still couldn't touch his feet.
Poor Pinker, getting skunked, stepped on by a cow, and (deservedly but harshly) set on by his fellow canine workers. Ah the life and adventures of a country dog.
Great news! Xrays show only broken metacarpals (the bones from the wrist down),not the wrist, and not even any toes. He doesn't need a cast.
We Xrayed his elbows since he was sleeping, they looked great, no arthritis at all, and he's >3 so that's good.
We are super happy and feel blessed and lucky.
