I will be searching for a new pup/gsd in the near future. Information on breeders of working dogs, GSD is needed, as I will be training it for search & rescue. I would like names of breeders in the Mid-West, because I would like to travel and pick-up the dog.
My last dog was found this way and the results were excellent. I couldn't have gotten a better dog, excellent drive, and worker. A challenge, but well worth the effort. Unfortunately, this breeder is not in the dog business at this time. All feedback is appreciated, thank you all.
Stephen,
As you already know, you'll be getting a companion that could be with you for the next 10 to 14 years, I wouldn't hesitate to travel anywhere in the Country to get a good dog.
I say this often, but limiting yourself to one geographical area puts you at a significant disadvantage if you're looking for a quality dog.
Just my two cents worth.
I agree with Will and Katie...a trip to Florida (LRC) would be well worth the money.
Contact Becky Shilling, in Oklahoma. I don't know if she's got any dogs on the ground, but I bet she knows some people. Another member, Angie Stark, knows some working dog people in southern Illinois.
You might consider sportwaffen kennels http://www.sportwaffenk9.com based just outside of Indianapolis. I know the people who run that kennel and they produce some very nice dogs. I'll be getting my first working GSD from them in a few months and I'm very excited about it. Nate Harves is the owner of this kennel and also the training director of our Schutzhund club. One of our members is the director of Indiana's Homeland Security K9 search and rescue facility at Camp Atterbury. If you are interested in SAR and live near Indiana, you should get in touch with her and check out their facility. Its amazing and a lot of fun to play around in. They've got rubble, a plane, buildings, tunnels, basements, and a cadaver pond. Very fun place! Our club website seems to be down for the moment =( but PM me if you want any more info. Good luck on your search!
Second on Nate's dogs. A little more towards the hard core working side -- no show ponies there. I like his old dog, Stuka, alot. Very solid temperament. Stuka's also picked up a few "Helper's Choice" awards.
Another kennel I like is Sue Dicero & Gabor Szilasi's Von Tajgetosz kennel. http://www.k9imports.com . Gabor is a regular on the national and world competition level. Really nice dogs. I liked Enzo a lot.
The midwest area of the US has perhaps the highest concentration of active Schutzhund clubs. However, you often have to find the really good dogs by word of mouth. A number of people with good dogs don't actively breed. You can find a list of breeders associated with USA on their website -- mostly show breeders but a number of working breeders too.
There's more people with good dogs around that I haven't listed but this is a start.
However, good dogs are where you find them. As Will noted, don't be afraid to travel a bit. I had to travel to the western side of Wisconsin from Northeast Ohio to get my old guy, Chance.
