Hi Everyone!
I'm the new kid on the block, and have a Rott/Lab mix that we've trained at home (with help of Leerburg videos of course). Long story short, I'm planning to buy an e-collar 1200NC for my dog to help leash (and heel) train her. I have some physical limitations and am not able to use a choke collar.
My questions is this, should she wear the collar all the time? Are there varied levels of correction (1,2, 3, etc)? Any and all advice is welcome. I've already learned alot on this board!! Thanks.
Trish
I have a Dogtra 1200 NC and it's excellent. I love it. 'Get a lot for your buck'.
Anyways, Lou Castle is on this board and if you have the time I would wait until he or someone else gives you a link to his very informative articles. (Sorry, I can't find the URL and won't be available for the next few days).
How you introduce it and how you establish the stimulation level for your particular dog WILL (not could) make all the difference in the world.
Hi Tim,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it'll work for me. I've tried a choke (not pinch) collar, but am unable to correct strongly enough due to a physical disability (muscular dystrophy). My very strongest correction would be "maybe" a point five or less. Haven't tried a pinch collar as they weigh more (to most the weight is nothing - to me, it feels like ten pounds!!)
My dog is sometimes aggressive to other (female only) dogs. She used to be afraid of them, now sometimes snaps at them. 95% of the time responds when I tell her to "be nice". She's normally very gentle and submissive - not needing much correction at all, but with distractions and other dogs, don't want to risk that 5%
Thanks for all the replies and info. I'll look forward to hearing Lou's feedback - I hadn't realized how important introduction of it is going to be.
Thanks guys!!!
Hi Lou,
I was able to get to your web site - thank you. The articles were very helpful. If I understand correctly, you use continous during training - with the exception of prey (or dog/dog) aggression, correct?
She already knows sit, lay down, etc - but I see your point about the introduction of collar, and her inclination to freak and/or bolt. I guess I should still stim her while commanding sit so that she'll learn how the collar works? 5% of the time she declines to sit on command (and I can't physically correct).
Thanks for the info. I'll re-read the board, and visit your web site again.
