I own an older Toyota Corolla Wagon that I use to transport my GSD. He fits comfortably in the back with the rear seats flattened. A nice cargo area. It is plenty big for him, but a crate that would fit in the area would be too small for him.
Anyone have any ideas how else to secure him in this area?
Would he fit into a size 400 crate? I know it may be tight but my collie was able to fit in one in the past when I had a Ford Escort (not a wagon). You should have seen me putting the crate together on the back seat and then loading the dog into the crate. Not to mention fitting all his "luggage" into the trunk area. LOL Any way, if he'd fit even if tight that would be an option. Also, a 500 crate should fit in the wagon although you might have to put it together in the wagon to squeeze it in.
I've always figured I want them to be in a crate that's too small so that they have less room to be thrown around in if I get into an accident. I've always felt comfortable putting a piece of rubber down for them to grip onto and the crate being big enough for them to at least half stand or half sit up in with their elbows bent a bit. When we're riding in a car they all have to lay down anyway, so I expect them to lay down in the kennel.
If you get one of those .....check with the auto company & see if they make one themselves for their own cars. They are made to fit the car perfectly & attach properly for safety...bolted in ...not just the rubber feet to hold weith pressure. They will fail if you have any kind of serious accident. Have a friend that found this out the hard way. Now she has one for her subaru made by subaru to attach properly to her outback.
