So, In an effort to show my support to the wife and her military career. I've uprooted myself and the kids, and have gone from the chilly climate of Maine, to Lawton,Oklahoma. I'm still trying to make up my mind about this place, but so far all I can say is ... flat and windy.
Certainly is a far different part of the country from Maine. Should be interesting for you. I'm guessing...should be lots of open land for the dogs to run. :-)
Thanks to both of you for your dedication to 'duty'.
Well, it won't be so wet and cold. No fish? No lobster. Isn't Lawton an Indian reservation?
How are the kids making the change in a new school? How are the dogs liking the new arrangement?
It's nice to hear from you, Ben. Sounds like you've been busy!
I've driven through Oklahoma on many occasions on my way to and from the Southwest, so my only experience is from the I-44 Turnpike and then I-40, the northeastern corner of the state to the Texas panhandle. From that limited vantage point, and at the time of year we were traveling, we always thought it seemed like a pretty state.
Good luck to you and your family in your new home!
Good for you, Ben. My wife supported me like that through my entire Air Force career so I can appreciate what you both are going through. Oklahoma is a strange place. I spent almost 5 years stationed at OKC. Ugly scenery, middle of nowhere, scary weather, and tough economy. Yet, we made the absolute best friends in our entire lives there so that place holds a special place in our hearts. The people there are amazing.
Oh, by the way, enjoy the weather. You're in for a fun ride, no matter the season.
Hey Ben! Welcome to OK. Lawton is about an hour and a half drive from us, but you should give us a buzz and come up and train some Sat. We have several other soldiers that are in Lawton that train here on occasion as well. PM me for our phone numbers!
And Greg! Dang! We have some boring scenery out in the western part of the plains, but we also have 11 distinct eco-regions and the scenic top three are within 50 miles of Lawton. #1 is in Bens' backyard!
My list includes the Talamena Mtn. drive (PERFECT this time of year), Chickasaw recreation area (my personal favorite) and Little Sahara.
Just remember Ben, when taking a hike, the bison are a LOT faster than they look! Don't let your dogs challenge one (especially in the spring when they have calves) or your walk will turn into a high-speed death race!
