I found this right outside my back door. I shot the pic, then turned it into a GOOD (dead) Black Widow.
Less than 24 hours later, poor Elsa comes in with her hind leg swollen from toes to above the hock about 4 times normal size. Temp 104.7. I searched the leg over and couldn't find a thing, which made me suspect spider bite. I started with hot soaks and after about the third soak, I finally got a spot to open up and TONS of nastiness started draining. Continuing antibiotics and soaks, but looks worlds better now. Most of the swelling is down except right around the hole.
Poor Elsa!
As many of these damn things as we have around there, I really am amazed no one has been bitten before!

Poor Elsa! I have never seen one of these yet, so thanks for posting!
It sounds like you did a great job Becky, getting the poison out and getting swelling down.
I need to read up on black widow spider bites as well as scorpion stings, thanks for the reminder!
I hope Elsa gets back to her old self very soon!

Hmmm..... After reading some, maybe it was actually a Brown Recluse that got her. For BW bites, all talks about paralysis and extreme pain with no or very little swelling. Respiratory problems are usually present as well.
This was painful, but mainly because of the extreme swelling. There were no symptoms of any paralysis. BR bites however, fit perfectly - extreme swelling, high fever, "blister" rupturing at bite site.
Unfortunately, it sounds like a BW bite is a emergency with a capital "E". Got to keep my eyes open. because like I said, we've got a kajillion of the damn things.

Ah, now I remember what I don't miss about living in Oklahoma. We used to see black widows quite frequently around our property, as well as other nasty critters. Like you said, lucky we didn't have any bad encounters. Poor Elsa. Hope she recovers quickly.

I sure don't want to meddle since I'm not a vet but I would consider a bite from either type of spider to be an emergency with a Capital E. I've never seen the effect of a BW bite but I have personally witnessed a bite from a friend bitten by a brown recluse (in Oklahoma, coincidentally). She had to have surgery to remove a piece of flesh from her thigh about the size of a baseball. Hopefully, you are taking Elsa to a vet?

If there is any tissue loss, yes, then I will. At this point, I'm doing everything the vet would do (I was a vet tech in an emergency hospital for many years)
The vet who owns it, that I worked for complains that I never bring him anything easy. Well, if it's easy, I take care of it myself!

I hope Elsa is back to feeling better soon...with no future ill-effects.
I HATE spiders..they really creep me out. My female kills any bug that comes within 20 feet of her. I always fear she will pick the wrong bug to kill & eat one of these days. Crazy dog!

Sounds like Elsa is in good hands (didn't realize you had been a vet tech). Hope she bounces back quickly.
I hate spiders too!
