Can anyone tell me what is generally the right age to start training with an e-collar? I have a 5 and 1/2 month old puppy and I would truly love to lose the long line (which is forever getting tangled up and caught in everything). His obedience is usually good but I don't want to take a chance on a 'Come' command without a way to enforce it (been there and done that).

Thanks Lou, I have been reading quite a bit about e-collars (including your website) but had not really seen this addressed outside of manufacturer recommendations. Is the lowest stimulation level low enough for a 45 pound puppy (do the levels vary between collar types?)? Clearly I want to be careful...

Yes, the levels vary with different brands and different models of Ecollars. I prefer a collar that has at least 15 levels (some makers count 6 stim levels on continuous and 6 on nick as 12 levels but that's not how I count them) to use the tool for teaching new behaviors. I'd only recommend two brands, the TriTronics and the Dogtra.
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer.
