I have 10 month old Catahoula and boy is she full of exuberance and energy! I walk her at a fast clip about 45 minutes to over an hour a day and she could keep going and going and going!
She knows the following really well: sit, down, watch me and back. She also waits for "ok" to eat. I've ordered the video about how to tug and am waiting on it to arrive. In the mean time, how old is she, really. Do I train her like a puppy for tug/out/fetch?
Also, she needs a job to do . . . she wants to play, play, play and run after anything that moves.

I would consider her a puppy, for larger breeds they usually arent mature till at least 1 1/2 - 2 years.
With most dogs you will know when they are an adult, one day you realize that they have matured and have a little more serious demeanor. They still like to play though

She's a puppy. If she's like the few Catahoulas I'm familiar with, physical maturity will be at or close to 2 years of age. Mental maturity around 3 years.
Since she likes to chase, perhaps her "job" could be taking herding classes or perhaps you'd both enjoy flyball.

Elaine, she IS like the few Catahoulas you know. :-)
I like the idea of herding! If I could actually play fly ball I'd like that, too. She's a great dog . . . just gotta get her a job.
Thanks

George, my beast is now 2 1/2 and still acts like a pup! These hounds are slow growing beasts, just plan on at least 2 before she grows up some. And be ready for the pissy teenager stage, ugh! Yesterday he was laying on the floor on his back barking and growling at himself! Nut. Later we got into a 'rasslen' match and dang if he still isn't mouthy! Not so much fun when he's 85lbs and he can mouth my bicep!
What part of the swamp are you in? One thing that helped Hank and I out a lot was taking walks along the ditches/bayous that flood control maintains. They are usually fenced in and not a lot of people and they are mowed.

George, the ChuckIt toy is your friend. We have a high energy dog also and it seemed impossible to slow her down. In addition to the frequent marker training and recall training sessions, we found a large enclosed open space where we were sure we could safely work with her off leash. Then we let tennis balls fly half the length of a football field with the ChuckIt. With a strong ball drive, it doesn't take long for those 50-80 yard sprints back and forth to wear her down. In fact, we had to be careful because it seemed she wanted more of that activity than seemed safe. Also, highly recommend games involving searching and tracking. That also wears them out faster.

I don't know much about the catahoula breed as a whole...but I would be carful hard running a pup until the growth plates close. On GSDs this is about 2 years of age. You can go alot of damage to their hips & overall skellletal system doing that.
Just some food for thought.

Sounds like Molly! She's a nut . . . but, fun! (Except when it drives me crazy ;-0 )
Trouble is my back put me on the ground over a year ago and I cannot walk more than about 50'! I am able to throw a toy and she walks (trots) on a treadmill 45 minutes to 1.25 hours a day. I'm in Houston.

Greg, today we start "outing" (as in "let me have it"). After a little training we definitely are going to use the Chuckit! That's a brilliant idea. And, there's a fenced in area not far away that she can be off leash.
Thanks!
