I have 2 fairly active border collies weighing 30# and 37#. I use Embark or Thrive (higher calorie lower carb good for active dogs). I rehydrate 1-1.5 cups a day and split it between my two dog. Along with that they also get either raw (1-1.5# between the two) or grain free kibble (2.5-3 cups between them)
If I fed THK by itself, I'd probably be spending $85-$100/month feeding the two dogs. This way I spend about $50-$60/month for both of them.
Same meal. You don't have the same issues with THK as you do in raw because there isn't the bacteria in THK that there might be in raw. It digests quickly so you can feed it with raw and it doesn't have the bacteria that may be in raw so you can feed it with kibble.
I use Embark (turkey)& Zeal (white fish) regularly. Occasionally use Love (beef). All grain free as I feed a totally raw diet with no grains. I mostly use it as a sauce over food, occasionally with RMBs if I don't have any muscle meat thawed or don't have enough MM thawed & have also used it as a total stand alone food for travel.
My dogs have extremely high food drive & basically would NEVER turn something down that I put in their bowls. But some dogs have an issue with the 'textiure' of THK. If you've not used it before add it slowly so they get used to the texture of the food.
Since I buy most of my dogs food at a restraunt wholesealer & the price is very very good & it has allowed allow me to feed up to 3 GSDs 100% raw. I honetly could not afford to feed my 2 GSDs 67# & 78# dogs 100% THK. I can feed my dogs for 3 months for what it would cost me to feed THK for maybe 1 month.
I also have to say that I like that ability to vary the variety of meats in my dogs' diet more then just 3 meats. I feed turkey, chicken, beef, pork, lamb, buffalo, goat & fish regularly. JMO
I followed the directions on the box. It was a while ago & he was younger. I will say that he would have gotten a higher amount then what is normal for his weight,as he really burns up calories. He never stays still. It think that you need to follow their amount suggestions & adjust for the individual dog from there.
I did & still do find that with him...it gives him a bit of loose stool if I give him more then a little bit of it. But that is just him...as my female does fine on it. But he is also a dog that needs more fat & bone in his diet then what I give my female or have given other GSDs that I have had here. He is also a dog that Bravo (which I usually keep on hand in case someone else needs to feed my dogs) doesn't have enough fat/calories in it for him either. If I were to put him on that full time he would need extra amounts of that also. He doesn't hold his weight on that either. So I don't think that it is just THK...it's him.
