In the past, my female GSD had harrassed her right foreleg repeatedly. A veterinary dermatologist confirmed that my girl is allergic to pollens, molds, mildews, etc, all the stuff in our rural environment. The vet also said that the allergies would probably get worse as she gets older. She had a spot on her leg about 2 inches long and half an inch wide that had no hair at all. I had done a lot of online research to find an answer. Then one day I got lucky. I found Dermacton. It is made by a company in the UK that creates healing products for horses and dogs. It is all natural (shea butter, beeswax, essential oils, herbal extracts). I started using this on November 18 and my girl immediately stopped licking. At this date, the hair has all grown back and you would never know there was ever a problem. This creme is a miracle.
What contributes with this type of allergic reaction is that GSDs have a great propensity toward OC (obsessive compulsive) behavior. So often it starts as a little spot & then is exasberated by their OCD. The trick is to catch it quickly before they get it to that point.
Wiping the dog down when they come into the house or even hosing them off & wiping feet all can help remove the pollin. Also freequently washing all bedding etc.
I also have a dog with allergies from vaccinosis. Allergic to pollins & molds.
I will have to see if that product is available here in the US.
I was interested, too, as one of my dogs is also a bit of an OCD licker (Doberman, another breed known for it). So here is a US company that sells the product mentioned:
