I've personally found that my male dogs have more even personalities- more predictable in their behaviors and mannerisms. I have seen the "mood swings" in other females as well (both spayed and not) though I'm guessing there is probably exceptions to both genders. I may be biased as well as I always seem to be drawn towards male dogs.

I have had male and female Boxers years ago, and now male and female Pointers, and Boerboels together in a 'pack' - all spayed - and my experience is while the bitches are more biddable, they are also more bossy and moody with the boys.
My Pointer male, being a 'soft' breed, is a dream, but a bit of a drip bless him, the Boxer male was a delightful thug, and my current big boy, Kaiser, is the love of my life, but without a doubt, the stupidest dog I have ever had.
For brains and beauty, I would pick another bitch, for loyalty and comedic value, I would possibly risk another male, but in my experience, bitches have been quicker to learn, and generally just smarter.
Nice to see you again John

The only moody female I've ever had was Mercy. She disliked male dogs with a passion and was unable to tolerate them for long, so I've had tons of females dogs come through my doors and not many males. Mercy was the only female dog out of dozens that ever had 'mood swings' (boy was she weird!) or was noticeably different in her mannerisms at any given time. All the other females were mostly spayed and many of them were very even keel and happy dogs.
All the male dogs I've had, with the exception of Radar, have been abused to the point of having some fairly serious emotional baggage that made them moody and unpredictable about what kind of dog I'd wake up to find in the kennel (issues ranged from depression to out right aggression from fear of 'new' situations despite the same thing happening every morning). Most of them were able to overcome those issues with some reconditioning and fair treatment, so I'm not sure if these problems could really be classified as moody or mood swings.

I swear my wife's female chocolate lab has taken on her OCD. I take the dog out to potty and she'll sniff for a while, find a spot, squats, then it's like "oh, don't like this spot, lets find another one" She'll do that 3-5 times before she'll finally goes. I've never seen another dog do that.

My girl is very moody, sometimes she will sometimes she won't, sometimes a pat sometimes not. She's very up and down compared to her brother who always seems the same, but like others have said she seems to be a much better OB dog compared to him but his drive is much higher than hers (I think it's just a training thing with these two and how I brought them up, girl-Ob from the start and very strict rules, boy-just a pet and show dog so very different upbringing). Generally I prefer males, all the ones I've had have been stronger personalities and harder than my females, but my girl kicks my boys butt and they NEVER annoy her or go near her food where they'll get in each others faces sometimes

Sorry to hear that John, every other day I hear of some poor sod losing their jobs or homes, and the amount of dogs that are at risk of being put into rescues because families can't find a way to keep them, breaks my heart...
What Brad says about his bitch being, well, a bitch - - rings so true for me, my Pointer bitch, is the smallest and most independent, almost indifferent of my pack, and the other 3 always defer to her, even the Boerboel bitch who is a bossy mare, simply rolls onto her back and does that upside down smile that says more than words when Bon has had enough of her clowning about with the boys, and simply stands up and walks over to her!
Like someone once said, "Bitches be crazy!"

only experience i've really had with a female BC was years ago before i actually had my first working BC . i took care of my co-workers female BC and within a week of her living with us she had become possessive enough of me that she took a nip at my wife when we happened to embrace in her presence .
other thing , if you raised your voice to her , you were pretty much done for the day .
