We have smiled over this phenomenon many times, and Bon did it just now, and while I think it is so sweet, I do wonder why.
I vaguely remember reading once it was often linked to early weening or removal from the litter before 8 weeks, but all my pups stayed with the mother until 10 weeks at my request, and so I am curious if that is a myth, and it is simply a idiosyncrasy that all animals have from time to time.
Does anyone have a theory about this?

Not long ago, I saw a youtube video mocking dogs that had tics when they slept. I read some articles on the web which indicated that some of these were the result of apnea-related sleep disorders in dogs. One of the clips from the youtube video was actually a case example from a study, and when I found out how bad that dog's condition actually was, I felt sorry for the poor dog. He had never had a restful sleep in his life.
IMHO, there is a possibilty that this is a disorder and not at all related to environmental conditions from Bon's childhood.

What breed?
Sleep apnea isn't totally exclusive to certain breeds, but the propensity is FAR greater in bully breeds, Pugs, Bostons, Boxers, Shih Tzus, Molossers, et al. (Overweight dogs of any breeds, too.)
Are there interruptions to snoring or breathing, pauses between snores, gasping, or anything like this?
Is it loud (like reverse sneezing)?
If none of these, then yes, normal healthy adult dogs have been known to make sucking motions and sounds in REM sleep. (Younger dogs may to do it even before fully asleep, as a kind of lulling thing, sometimes even using fabric.)

I think I saw a discussion about that vid, was it on here??
Thing is, all of my crew have done this at one time or another, like yipping and 'running' in their sleep, the suckling resembles the noise a human baby makes when it is feeding, god, does this mean all my dogs are crackers?!

PS
A good place for a reminder that overweight dogs of any breeds are also FAR more prone to sleep apnea than trim dogs. Internal fat clogs up the airways when the dog is lying down. (Just like overweight humans with sleep apnea.)
This is just one of the 38 million reasons to keep our dogs' weight controlled.
(I don't mean you, Tracey; I don't think your dogs are fat.)

No. Of course, they may all be crackers, but no, this isn't a sign of it.
In fact, I have one who is definitely crackers, but not a hint of apnea.

Barring any medical issues, it does sound cute.
Have you tried sticking a soother in there? A big enough one that she doesn't inhale it of course.

BonBum is my orange and white EP, she is a bit of an odd wee dog, always has been, funny as hell but she often sits in the corner of the sofa and just stares at me, has done since she was a few months old Def not over weight..
There has never been any sort of common denominator with any of my past or present dogs, other than they live with me... but it is something they all did on occasion.

See now I don't know now if you are extracting the urine CJ
I actually did once see a woman in Blackpool pushing a pushchair with a small white fluffy something with a soother in it's mouth, I was so taken aback I tripped up the kerb watching it go past!

Well, my "not crackers" remark isn't engraved in stone.
