Carlin is classic ACD, from his sharp, inquisitive temperament, to his velcro dog habit of needing to be near me at all times (shower, bathroom, sleeping etc), to his feeling that everything needs to be controlled with his mouth.
However, I think he really should have been born a coonhound. This dog ALWAYS has his nose on the ground, smelling everything. He trails on his own when we are in fields, finding mice and other things in the grass. He even smells out worms and tries to eat them!
Just today, he treed a squirrel in the backyard, and squatted back on his hind legs, front legs in the air, and looked right up the tree. I thought he was going to bay! He always looks UP into trees, and even watches airplanes!
Considering he is a blue heeler, and his nosey, coonhound like habits, I would say he SHOULD be a Blue Tick Coonhound.
Thunder, #1 GSD is the classic image of a GSD as told by Von Stephanitz. He's never disappointed me in anything he's done or supposed to do. SAR trained, Cadaver trained, Article search trained, Schutzhund III, CDX, HT, TT and CGC.
Trooper, #2 GSD is a like a golden retriever with a dark side. At 5+ yrs old he still acts like a goofy puppy. He can't stand still when you pet him....hell, he can't even stand still if you smile at him. He'll play with you all day but if he doesn't know you don't piss him off!
Both love the grandkids but it can turn into bowling for babies with Trooper if I don't keep an eye on him. The four older gkids usually ask the 5 yr old to put him in the kennel when they go in the back yard. He's got better control of the dogs then anyone but me.
When Thunder plays tug with the gkids he just stands there and holds the tug while THEY shake and pull on it. When he retrieves for them he returns it and drops it in front of them. When he retrieves for me he damn near knocks me over with it on the return if I don't ask for a formal retrieve. When I play tug with him he'll damn near pull my shoulder out of it's socket. The thinking GSD!
John, he sounds like a real working type ACD to me. We use them on my Uni campus to move cattle. Apparently they were crossed with Dingoes way back in their history, and that really shows in a lot of their character.
Does Carlin ever 'pounce' on small animals; where he sits back on his haunches and launches straight up and down?

Yup, exactly as a fox would!
Also, you're correct, they did have dingoes added to their bloodline, to add a "silent" stalk to the noisy collie blood they were based on. They also have bull terrier, dalmatian, and kelpie in their past!
