A job we have is going to get the 9 seven hundred pound calves from the field, separate them from their mothers, and walk them back to a dry lot where they eat grain, then they can go back to mom. Weaning will be soon-- this is a step, where the calves learn to be separate and eat.
Each day I've been doing this with my English Shepherd who terrifies the calves and makes it pretty tough. But I'm training him so I put up with it.
Today I lost patience with the ES and let Pinker do it. HE WAS PERFECT. Then we had some pigs to put away and Pinker did that perfect too.
You did a great job with Pinker. (Good boy Pinker.) Good grief...look how far you have come with him from where you started. It's nothing short of amazing!!!
It will just be a matter of time before you have the 'young sprout' toeing the mark. :-) Hang in there, Betty. YOU CAN DO IT!!
Way to be Pinker! I'll bet your property is gorgeous. If you ever need help from someone who has absolutely no idea what they are doing, who also happens to own a 8 month old German Shepherd that would mess up every herding attempt you had, let me know! I would love to visit!
The pup will come around. He just has to mature a little and he'll start to take his work seriously. He's at that "goofball" stage right now. It's frustrating training a dog during this stage, but eventually they grow up
Maybe we could get Betty to run a few cattle coaching sessions for us know nothings.
And play that Calf Cuisine thing, where we see if we can get Pinker to do what Betty does, separating those babies.
Or because our skills are so lacking, maybe something like Pinker Porker Poker. Pinker could deal out the pigs to everyone and Betty could tell us what they're worth, after we finish placing our bets, of course. Could be fun.
But fun and games aside, what a great working companion!!
He's always struck me as a special boy. Thank goodness he's got such a great teacher, someone who's been able to bring out that potential in him.
I am so grateful for all your help. I tried to do everything you guys said, no obedience class, raw food, de-sensitizing, marker training--- And the NILIF.
It all worked, everything, I think because the dog was so smart, it didn't take too long to see a change. A few years to this point but progress was made as soon as I started to LISTEN.
We just got the pigs 3 wks ago, they weigh about 70 lbs. They are 4 month old female feeder pigs. Today was their first experience outdoors ever ---
