Our puppy absolutely loves pet botanics dog food rolls the lamb and rice flavor, he will walk through fire to get a tiny piece. The problem with them that we are having is they crumble so bad. The dog gets distracted easily looking for crumbs or when we are done training he insists on going back and licking the floor wherever we were training. I have read on this board about other people using food rolls as training treats and I'm wondering if there is a way to prepare them to eliminate the crumbling.
I use Natural Balance, but I found that the beef crumbles less than the lamb, which seems to be a leaner meat. The turkey is the worst. Refigerating helps, also.
We use Natural Balance food rolls, the lamb rolls seems to crumble the least.
We use all the flavors of NB food rolls, I find that if I put the rolls in our fridge a day before I cut them, they produce less crumbs. Keeping the unused rolls and cubes in the fridge also helps.
I used to use Natural Balance Rolls. Then I tried Red Barn food rolls. They don't crumble and the dogs like them even more. Now, it's Red Barn all the way.
don't we discuss the darndest things on here . . .
trying to explain to not dog marker trained people why a food has to have a certain consistency , size and structure . . . yeah they think i'm weird .
i keep my rolls , mostly natural balance , some rollover in the fridge prior to dicing , and then letting them air dry for a period ( up to 24 hrs ) reduces the crumble effect , at least when you are actually handling it .
there is still a bit of shrapnel in the bottom of the feed bag towards the end of a load , but i just toss that in with the kibble he eats .
Freeze them solid in cut up slices before thawing and cutting into training size bites. I don't really know why but it makes them not crumble hardly at all. Store in the freezer or coldest part of refrigerator.
Just an FYI for those who have been using Natural Balance for years. At some point they changed their formulas. They now contain sugar. It's actually the third ingredient by volume in the lamb formula. I was NOT happy to see that change. I'm surprised they can still sell it as a "complete and balanced" dog food. I used to recommend them to everyone. I don't anymore.
It's getting nearly impossible to find a dog treat without sugar.
Cathy, thanks for the info on Natural Balance rolls. I know I looked at the ingredient lists when I first started using them a few years ago. I didn't realize they had been changed. Sigh, guess I will have to look for other options.
