I am a new bee here and a first time dog buyer then owner. So I decided to come here and seek advice from dog punditz.
I am basically thinking to buy a puppy out of Lord from schraderhaus kennel or a Congo X zara or Congo x fida puppy.
If any of you know about these lines what would you recmmend to go with. Congo Vikar or Lord.
While I don't know what breeds those dogs are I highly caution you from buying a working dog if it's your first dog ever UNLESS you have a good mentor/trainer lined up to learn from.
What's wrong with adopting a first dog and making all the mistakes before dropping serious coin?

EVEN IF you have a mentor, he doesn't have to live with the beast. You do.
In the just the past year, I've seen two $2500 dogs given away because ppl got in over their heads. And they had one of the best trainers I've ever seen. He also had three of his $800 dogs returned to him for NO REFUND.
Just my personal choice but one of my present GSDs is out of a Vikar bitch, Lens Vikar.
Hands down the absolute best dog of ANY/MANY breeds I've owned in a long life time with dogs.
No doubt you can probably find the same statement from a Lord fan.
Don't underestimate the tenacity of a dog lover to 'live with the beast'! I still think anyone who hasn't ever had a dog that was their sole responsibility should adopt from a shelter (there are plenty of purebreds there dying for a home) or a reputable rescue.

Hello all,

I wasn't clear on what kind of dog you are talking about getting here so I searched for the Schraderhaus website. Without knowing anything else and just judging from their website, it sure appears like they are top notch. Don't know if that means anything and I'm sure others are chuckling at my ignorance of Schradhaus. However, they are also on the farthest corner of the country from you.
That said, I also have to caution you on your choice for such a serious first dog. What are your intentions regarding training and activities and why from a breeder so far away? How good is your knowledge about dog nutrition, health and behavior?
The only reason I'm posting this is we also took a similar plunge. We wanted to experience a serious breed of dog once in our lives and ended up with a Malinois. We had our hands full but we also had over 40 years of raising and training dogs, mostly mutts and smaller dogs. Don't get me wrong. It's been a great experience and Bailey has been the best dog we ever had but I'm not sure we would be saying that if she was our first dog. I'm not sure we would have had the ability to turn her into a great dog if she was our first. My recommendation is to strongly consider the other folks' advise here about a less challenging breed or a mixed breed first to get you ready for the time you want to take on a more serious breed like a working line GSD or any similar dog.
