Sad beyond words. <SIGH>
We are often far more trusting then we should be. One needs to do their own research.

W e HAVE to advocate for our own dogs. We have to realize that our vets are assaulted constantly from every direction with the same kind of bought-and-paid-for pharma "research" that Hills-SD is so good at.
The pharma reps have a job: to sell more vax. That is what they are paid for.

The hard part, as we learned, is getting a vet to actually listen to you. Too many of them (human doctors too) have an attitude of "you couldn't possibly know what's best for your pet, Just do what I say."
We did our own research and we knew and kept saying the entire time that Diego had an infection but we weren't listened to. And his problems could all be traced back to when a vet extracted his teeth without giving any antibiotics for the infection AND gave him the 7-way vaccine booster shot (without permission!). Sadly, all too often these days, the bottom line profit is more important than the animals a vet is treating.

Ted Kerasote's new book "Pukka's Promise - The Quest for Longer-Lived Dogs" has a big section in it about over vaccinating.
Here's a link http://www.kerasote.com/book-page.php?isbn13=9780547236261
and a good review:
"Ted Kerasote gently and intelligently questions our fixed notions about living with dogs. Anyone who reads Pukka's Promise can't help but become a better dog person. I'd like it to be compulsory reading for all practicing vets and veterinary students."
—Bruce Fogle, DVM, author of The Dog's Mind

Ted is one of my favorite authors, I especially loved "Merle's Door: Lessons From A Freethinking Dog". Ted was also kind enough to take time out of his schedule to respond to my email when I wrote him about the loss of my GSD over a year ago.
I bought "Pukka's Promise" the day it came out and recently finished it. In my opinion, it is an invaluable resource for any dog owner. Not only does it cover all kinds of great topics such as vaccinations, coefficient of inbreeding, raw diets and nutrition, eye-opening details of animal control and shelters in the U.S. as well as around the world.... but Ted has compiled a massive reference of information in the notes section in the back for easy referral. Just an outstanding read!

" ... giving him the 7-way vaccine booster shot (without permission!)."
My dogs' charts (files) are in red folders. This means that there is an exceptional instruction inside to read before anything is done with them. Inside, attached to the cover as you open the file, is a big warning that they receive NO VAX without written OK from me.
Their vet and the office manager have both signed my copy of this instruction.
A bit much? No. Not when I have read here and elsewhere, over and over, about vax administered to dogs without owner permission, even during GROOMING visits!
It is routine in some practices for techs to administer annual "boosters" whenever the animal is there, even without regard for the clear package instructions about vaccines not being suitable for a sick dog.

There are minimal-vax protocols formulated by vets (Dodds comes to mind) ... protocols that cover the core vax and explain the individual decisions to be made for non-core vax and for boosters.
Distemper and parvo and rabies are terrible diseases.
But IMO, the miraculous vax that have virtually eliminated these horrors here, just as vax have wiped out smallpox, polio, and too many terrors to list, have led to wild overuse.
In some ways, it's comparable to what we have done with antibiotics .... antibiotics that have saved millions of lives but that have now been so overprescribed and overused that they have become an agent of "superbug" development.

This is, in my opinion, sheer stupidity at best and downright malpractice at worst. Before doing dentals on dogs that obviously were going to need extractions, we usually started them on the abx AT LEAST 3-5 days BEFORE.

I just had words with my vet's office staff. I specifically asked to speak to a VET because I have concerns about the vaccines required for boarding the foster pup when we go out of town for a funeral next week, and wanted to know if we could get a waiver.
I was told by the front desk worker that they would have to hospitalize the pup for kennel cough and start him on antibiotics ALONG WITH giving him the proper vaccinations... all while he's underweight and sick.
Hospitalization for a cold? Antibiotics for a viral infection? Vaccinating a sick dog when FDA regulations say to NOT do it? Um... no. Next time when I say 'I want to speak to a vet' I'm going to insist I speak to a vet or I'll take my money somewhere else that will allow me to speak to a licensed doctor and not someone who does data entry and answers phones.
