Meet "Rem".....a college student bought her at 7 weeks, dumped her on her family a month later when she went to school and she's been bouncing around between family members until she ended up with the sister who's got two dogs of her own and many small children in a very small apartment that only allows two dogs. The were on their way to the pound when I contacted them about her. Our local pound is high kill and dogs with ANY issue never even make it to the adoption floor.
I went to get her sight unseen....she's MICRO sized....like the side of the average 12 week old mal puppy, and half the size of Ryuk when he was 5 months....except she's 11 months apparently. I checked her teeth...they're all adult....but she looks YOUNG in person.
I introduced her to Gambit first by putting them both in the side by side kennel for the ride home. She spent the entire time trying to eat his ears though the side of the crate. Since we got home Gam has been letting her walk all over him (quite literally actually), I let Ryuk put her in her place when she tried to gaurd the couch from him (I let him roll his eyes and sit on her little snarly little butt when she tried to get all scary). She's still got her puppy card so he's been quite nice to her even when she's a little jerk.
According to the sister she's dog aggressive at random...from what I've observed here she has some lack of socialization based confusion about how to react to things and doesn't understand basic requests for play but already she's catching on that my dogs will not "make" her do anything she doesn't want to and will leave her alone immediately if requested, and that will share all toys/attention with her. She's gone from snarly face if they pass her with a toy to "will you play tug with meeeee?" with Gam (which is just funny to watch). The only thing she hasn't warmed up to is the tether and this horrible "death rib clamping device" I wrestled her into (I call it a harness)
She has NO training....I mean NONE, she can't even sit if you try to lure her with a treat. We played WWE smackdown to get a harness on her so she doesn't slip a collar and she was a pretty good sport about it. She will chase anything that moves, super food motivated, loves tug.
My housemates have fallen in love with her so I'm giving them 3 days to decide if they are interested in keeping her, if not I'll be looking for a home for her. Either way I've started marker training, she's smart and creative...but the Ryuk style smart and creative...so freeshaping games for basic OB positions not going to be an option for her (you totally want me to spin in a circle, bark, stand on my hind legs and shake my paws right? There's no way you'd want something like "sit" right?)
He sounds like a real character, and thank god you got in there before the wee boy headed for the pound.
And the REALLY reassuring thing for me at least, is you will do what ever is right for HIM, although I can’t imagine a better home for him than right there with you and your crew.
Looks like a mini ACD. Bet she's pretty bossy, perhaps bitchy, super smart. Cool of you to take her.
After you teach her the basics if you are trying for a home for her you might consider a farm.
I don't know how folks live with these smart dogs without teaching them anything at all. I guess the answer is the dog ends up running the show until the people can't stand it any more and then they take it to the shelter.
