My take on this is that he's a vile piece of sh*t and he's only going to Petsmart because it's a public venue and he wants to show off under the guise of training the poor animal.
He most likely got a Malinois because of the tough-guy look all those stupid TV shows are putting out there. Biker gangs that train patrol dogs, specials on 'war dogs', dogs rappelling out of helicopters.
I knew this would happen. It's only a matter of time before other vile pieces of sh*t buy them and put in a concentrated effort to ruin the breed.

I had heard this several days ago and I couldn't be more sick about it. I would feel the same way whether he got a GSD, a Rottie, a Dobie, or really any other breed. But as far as the Mals, I fear for the future of the breed, especially since their military expertise has become public knowledge. I fear they are well on the way to becoming too popular among the wrong type of owners. It's sad; we've already seen so many breeds go down that road.

I kind of don't think so. Malinois being malinois they make terrible pets. They take too much work for most people to be a "normal" dog, especially as puppies. While some look tough, the skinny, tall ones not so much.
You want to intimidate alone? Get a Rottie or Dogo.
There are low-drive malinois from working lines, and there are already show line malinois out there.
I almost NEVER see a working-line German Shepherd out and about and people who are at all interested could easily find out what lines the military uses in terms of GSDs and go and get one. I truly doubt we'll be seeing malinois go the same route as the pitbulls. Or for that matter the GSD with the show-line/working line split.
First and foremost, the malinois is not a dog fighting breed so that is out of the equation- the malinois is not going to be the next pitbull... not happening.
In Europe, the malinois aren't so uncommon as here in US and aren't ruined. In fact, after German short-hair pointer mixes, they appear to be the most popular skijor/bikejor/scooter dogs.
I love my malinois, and I will always have malinois in my life, but nobody who sees how much work I put into my dog is looking into getting one. Just the opposite, in fact.

As I've seen and am sure many of you, there's a lot of crap going on out there with the way dogs have and are being treated, and not just neglect.
The fact this story was highlighted so quickly tells me he's not raising this dog alone or behind closed doors (read a lot of public scrutiny there).
There are so many dogs that end up in the wrong hands, under the wrong circumstances. They're often neglected and worse and end up euthanized after a short, horrific life.
Yeah, this guy did a bunch of really bad things to a lot of dogs that suffered greatly in his hands. Stuff that nightmares are made of. Many (me included) wanted to see him meet the same fate that he gave those dogs.
But he didn't and he's been given a second chance. Unlike some other afflictions, I've also seen dog abusers truly remorseful and willing to do everything in their power to make up for their past thoughtless deeds.
Not saying that this man is or will provide the best home to this particular dog, only time will tell that. But when things like this are out of our hands, I like to hope for the best before jumping to conclusions about the worst.
Mals, like many of these stronger breeds, end up in a lot of bad places. Let's hope the person that gave or sold this pup to him was making the right decision. Who would do that?
Hi, I'm Michael Vick, can I buy one of your puppies? I think not. If there wasn't some pretty darn convincing criteria, my blame would be with the person or organization that handed an innocent puppy over to him.

I can think of several KNPV Mals that I would love to see him take to Petsmart for training. Hell, I'd put the prong collar on for him.
"You see Mike, you need to pop the leash a little before you tell him to sit, maybe 3 or 4 times. No, no, no... it's normal for him to growl like that. He's just talkin' to you buddy. That's good. Now bend over and pat the top of his head, real hard. Yeah. He likes that. What's that? He always drools and snaps his teeth when he's having fun. It's a Mal thing. I think you two are about to get really close."
