Well it's raining "cats & dogs"( lol). So I decide to use a flat piece of wood for a touch pad. I wanted to try some free shaping since I have plenty of time.
Ramsey hadn't eaten breakfast, so I knew he would be hungry. I marked and rewarded as he looked, then sniffed, and finally touched it with his paw. It didn't take much.
Then, he just held his foot on the wood and looked at me.
So I rewarded him for duration. He just kept standing with his foot on the wood and looking at me. So I kept rewarding him!!
That's the great thing about marker training. The dogs believe THEY are making you give the reward. That's a whole bunch more fun than teaching a behavior in order to avoid a correction.

Fun for both of us ... dog and trainer!
That lightbulb moment when the dog realizes how it works is priceless.
Wait... here's the sequel to this today. We started where we left off yesterday, 1 foot on the wood. Only a minute went by and he put both feet on it. I jack potted, praised, threw a party!!
I went into the kitchen to make breakfast, when I turned around, he was still standing on it staring at me, like where's my reward? Of course he got one.
What's funny, is that usually he will offer different behaviors until he gets the one I want. Never knew he could be so persistent!!
Can't help but crack up laughing. He always makes me smile!!

This reminds me of one of mine, who when he is in the vicinity of someone else's dog being worked with by me, will perform commands with extravagance. For example, I might say "sit" to the new dog, and Leo, over where he's supposed to be (out of the way) will sit with the loudest thump he can muster.
"Sit!"
"THUD" from 15 feet away.
Never gives up hoping that rewards might fall his way even if he isn't part of the session.
