ok, so I finally got tired of having to pierce 7 caplets of fish oil everytime I had to feed Tucker. Those little suckers are slippery and i was finding fish oil all over the kitchen.
So I bought a small bottle of the Grizzly Salmon oil to start using.
Problem is...it really doesn't agree with Tucker. He has had the runs ever since I started him on it. So I took a look at the bottle and see that in my rush, I had grabbed a small bottle of Grizzly for cats, not the one for dogs.
I didn't see any difference in the percentages & amounts:
Cat:
Ingredients - Salmon oil, Rosemary extract
Nutritional Content Per 100g
Energy 3750 kJ/890 kcal
Crude Protein 0g
Crude Fat 99g
Crude Ash 0g
4 oz Bottles Dispense These Amounts Per Pump
DHA - 166 mg
EPA - 147 mg
Omega-3 - 478 mg
Omega-6 - 55 mg
Dog:
Ingredients - Salmon oil, Rosemary extract
Nutritional Content Per 100g
Energy 3750 kJ/890 kcal
Crude Protein 0g
Crude Fat 99g
Crude Ash 0g
4 oz & 8 oz Bottles Dispense These Amounts Per Pump
DHA - 166 mg
EPA - 147 mg
Omega-3 - 478 mg
Omega-6 - 55 mg
16 oz & 32 oz Bottles Dispense These Amounts Per Pump
DHA - 210 mg
EPA - 300 mg
Omega-3 - 925 mg
Omega-6 - 100 mg
So Im pretty sure it's the same product as the Dog variety.
As per the instructions on the dog one I am suppose to give 5-6 pumps...so i was starting out with 3 pumps to get him used to it.
when i noticed the runs I took it down to 2 for a couple days and still the runs.
So now ive taken it down to 1 pump..which isn't much for a 75 pound dog. Especially since spring is practically here in Ontario and this is when he starts to get itchy. I just started the 1 pump last night, so im not sure if the runs will still be there.
Is it possible that the grizzly salmon oil is just too rich for him? Has anyone else had this problem with this product with their dog???

Was the oil he used to be on a deodorized one? Can you link me to it?
What size were the gelcaps before? A gram of fish oil? 1000 mg? Or 1200 mg?
How much does he weigh?

Also, can you measure and tell me the measuring-teaspoon-to-pump ratio in the cat bottle?
Such as, how many measuring teaspoons are filled with 3 pumps?
ETA
Never mind this question; I found my notes on how many ml per pump of each size Grizzly bottle.

I can link you to it:
http://www.amazon.ca/Jamieson-Salmon-Omega-Complex-000mg/dp/B00BMTITVA
not deodorized as far as I know.
1000 mg caps
and he's 75lbs.
I had absolutely no problems with the caplets. I was just getting too lazy to squeeze out the oil and figured i would give the grizzly a shot.
he had problems with glucosamine too. If i used a tablet and crushed it up in his food he would get the runs. But then i found some liquid glucosamine and he's fine with it.

Let's see: You were giving 7 grams. Now you have given 6 (in 3 pumps) and he got the runs.
Were you squeezing out the oil or just piercing the gelcap and putting it in the food? (Just trying to rule out the possibility that the slower release of the gelcaps was favorable to his GI system.)
Were you maybe splitting the dose between meals?

i was squeezing it out.
And no, his first meal is just kibble no oil. I only used the oil in his second meal.
maybe i will have to start with just 1 pump and really ease him into the grizzly? I could see it causing problems if he'ld never had fish oil...but he's been on fish oil for a couple years now.
And nothing else food wise has changed. He gets kibble with some canned tripe, fish oil and a Vit E tablet. And grain free dog biscuits!

Well, I think I'd start with no diarrhea at all. When I saw that he was back to log poops, I'd do one pump, as you say.
I've seen slight GI disturbance between Grizzly and Nordic, but only the very first time they had the Grizzly.
That was when I started splitting their fish oil between meals. (My atopic dog gets a lot more fish oil than the others, so I would split it for him anyway, and it didn't really make more trouble to do it for all.)
Even if you end up splitting it, I'd still go with none until he is back to log poops. It may not be the fish oil at all, so you probably want to remove it and see. And you also probably want to start over with no inflamed gut from diarrhea.

Well this is his first time with the Grizzly.
I hate to have him off fish oil for even a day or two at this time of year.
I'll see how his poops are tonight and go from there.

OK, I getcha. Then maybe get the oil you know he has no problem with and gradually substitute part of it with Grizzly, working up to all Grizzly?
I know what you mean about time of year. My allergic dog .... I can't think of anything that would make me take him off fish oil and E in spring.

well i'll wait to see how he poops then do that...use his normal fish oil and just a pump of the grizzly...slowly ease him in.
Thanks...again!
I probably should've just PM'd you seeing as it's just you and me in here...lol
