The only dog I've ever owned that didn't have some sort of allergy or skin issue is Shelby. Go figure Shelby doesn't even like me. I'm cursed to have itchy, bald dogs.
I found a bald spot on River's tail from chewing. The skin isn't broken yet and there's no inflammation or other 'ick'. She's on Advantix but it's close enough for a new dose that I went ahead and dosed her this evening. I put some bitter apple around the spot to see if she'll leave it alone. If not she gets to wear the cone of shame.
I've also noticed in the past week she's been over grooming her front legs on the bony forearm part. She leaves her paws alone so at least I don't have to deal with yeast feet (had a dalmatian that kept giving herself yeast infections between the toes and nail beds).

Spring sure is frustrating.
Shins (more often back ones, but front ones too), tail, base of tail, and backbone are classic flea spots. Is this spot near the tail's base? Is there any other body geography that's affected? Does she ever suddenly bite at any body part?
She scratches around her ears some, but other than that I've only caught her nibbling the arms. I didn't even know she was attacking her tail until I saw the bald spot. Perhaps she's doing it at night. The bald spot on the tail is about the middle of the tail. I checked her back legs up to the butt and crotch area for any evidence of chewing but I don't see any. The hair is intact and the skin looks healthy.
I'm frustrated having to use Advantix but when a dog starts manically chewing bald spots then it's for the best I'd rather hit the problem with the big guns than have to treat staph infections and give steroids.

Samantha, I'd just like to say that I join your rant!!!!!!!!
I've had 3 dogs, 2 have been major allergy dogs - year round. I want always want to own a dog, but I must say I'm afraid to get another after Kasey!! Don't know if I could keep from being a screaming, insane person if it happens again!
I agree with your using the flea product. I have to too - all year round here in CA. But like you said, it's a lot better than the alternative of yeast, infections, antibiotics, steroids and hairless dogs miserable dogs.
