I start pretty close.. make sure my dog knows how to take a mark... and look straight..this will make your sendaway strait when it gets to a longer distance.. To do this.. I take my right hand and put it in thier collar.. and have my left hand ..close to thier face.. show a strait line.. when the dog marks on the toy.. I tell them to "get it". then we play.. as the distance gets a bit longer.. I add the vorous...then "get it". I rarely drop my dog in training.. I perfect my down in other areas when the dog is in high drive for the toy.. Alot of dogs slow down in anticipation of the down command... but it sounds like you are trying to go the distance to fast.. hope this helps a bit. Jody
