So as of now, I have 5 days to come up with an alternative to Nanna/Nanny/Grandma/Granny etc etc.
I have scoured the interweb for alternatives, and so far discovered MiMi, Bibi, Oni, Big G as popular choices, depending on the regions of the world, but nothing really sounds right, I know I am in the year of the half century, but I really don't feel old enough to be a 'Granny',so has anyone got any unusual or quirky ideas?
Also, am I the only person in the world who is struggling with the reality of becoming a grandparent??

My grandmother was Granny. I think you should be proud of the name. Not all of us get to be Granny.
I know it was something I hoped for, but isn't happening. If you look too young for it, that's all the better!

Well, I doubt I can come up with anything you haven't already found in your searching the Web. If it were me, I guess I would try to keep it short, simple, and not too "cute." Personally, I like just plain "Gram."
As far as your struggle, I will never be a grandparent (I understand you have to have kids first!), but I am definitely old enough to be one, and, yes, I do struggle with accepting the numbers on the birthday cake, if I let myself think about it too much. I guess the trick is in learning to live in the moment and enjoy each day to the fullest. (Not saying I've mastered that, but I haven't given up trying!) And I think you're very lucky to have your family expanding the way it is.

Where I am from (Cape Breton, NS) the Indigenous people there are Mi'Kmaq or Mic Mac - which is part of my heritage on my mother's side, use the work Nukumi - it's quite unique and pretty although maybe a bit difficult for a child to pronounce .. here is a link to a YOUTUBE video that has both Grandmother and Grandfather pronounced correctly ..

You could also find out what other language is in your lineage and find the word for grandmother there.
A little aside - our grandson couldn't pronounce grampy so my husband was called crappy for a year lol

Edit reason: can't spell :(

Our experience was that all of our kids grandparents (both our parents are divorced and remarried) wanted to be called a certain name, granny or grandmother or whatever, but when our two boys started speaking they made up their own names and they stuck.

Embrace being a grandparent! It's a wonderful experience. It doesn't mean you're old, it means you have the miracle that is a grandchild in your life.

We are italian and called our grandma "nonna" My friend's grandson calls her "kiki", and her sister Nini" Another friend felt too young to be a grandmother and insisted on being called "Aunt Ginny"
You could always wait and let the grandchild name you. So cute what they come up with.
Congrats!!

I am a massive 'Big Bang Theory' fan, and that's what Sheldon calls his grandmother! I love this name!
ETA
I think once the boy is here the instinct will kick in, I will be his only grandparent, so I know how important the role is, I just hope I am up to the job!

Which name are you referring to, Tracey? I don't see it mentioned in the thread so far, and I don't watch the show.

Oh, my, that does up the ante a bit, doesn't it! I'm betting you and your first-born grandson are going to have a fantastic relationship.
