Talking about anxiety in dogs. How does your dog react to a thunder storm? Mine usually does not care too much, and enjoys watching it, but this time while I was filming he actually had a reaction as the lightning hit... The time between lightning and thunder was less than a half second, that means within 150 yards.

Bailey does well in storms. She's not crazy about them but she's not as reactive as our previous dog, Tasha. If a storm hits during the day, she'll just lay down by us as if nothing is happening. I'll usually make a point of playing with her or working on search or obedience drills just to get her mind focused on something else. If a storm hits at night, the worst she will do is come out of her bed and sleep beside my side of the bed. Her bed is on my wife's side, against an exterior wall so that is just her way of getting further away from the noise.
Our previous dog, Tasha, on the other hand didn't do well at all. She panted like cracy and and would go off and hide under the bed or go to the basement and hide under something. She was also prone to seizures and storms would trigger them. Wasn't fun if that happened. We had to give her extra doses of Pheno if we knew a storm was hitting.

Sadie kicks into a high state of anxiety, but it is more similar to a heightened state of drive than it is fear, and has the same reaction to fire works. She gets extremely sharp and, if outside, will race around the yard, making short bursts and sprints in the direction of an extremely loud, close strike. She will strut in circles with her tail flagging, and occasionally bristle up. If inside, she is content to lay by one of the low front windows with her head on the sill and ears up, totally fixated on the sounds, vibrations, and sights. She will occasionally whine, and if there is a violent strike, she may pop up to her feet and growl, or pace and ask to go outside.

Here in San Francisco, electrical storms are quite a rarity, but my Akita takes the odd thunder & lightning episode in her stride

Marco has never paid any attention to thunder. Last year we lit off some small fireworks when he was about 4 months old. He just laid there and watched. However about 2 weeks ago I was walking him when a storm was just rolling in. We had a huge crack of lightning and thunder very close and he jumped slightly but went right back to sniffing.

My dogs are fine during storms but my mom's dog gets very anxious and will cry until he can hide under a bed... until last week when we had tornadoes all around. I put him downstairs in the laundry room with my dogs and he was fine! Then this week we had a middle of the night storm. He was at my parents' house and slept right through it. First time in his life with us that it happened!

I am so lucky both dogs can't care about thunder storms. Harley does not lie when a lot of snow falls of the arena roof(metal roof with no insulation).
Also both my boys are ok with gun shots in the near woods.
Strangely they were unconfortable and wanted to in the house with last week explosion at BEM firework place 15km for my place yeti could hear the sound for over 10 minutes. All the horses also were very bugged by the event while most of them don't react to thunder.

Shyner and Caterina are afraid of storms. Cat will get clingy and pant and shake- Shyner will hide until it's over. I've found that the combination of ThunderShirts and Rescue Remedy have helped both dogs.. though Shyner's improvement may be due to hearing loss (she's 12).
The other 3 dogs could care less unless it's a particularly violent storm- then Toni may get a little "worried" and will be more vigilant than normal.

Edit reason: inabilty to spell- one should not forget the 2nd R in ThunderShirts...

As my older GSD (9) has aged he has shown more sensitivity to storms now. Not to the point of panic but he paces in the yard a bit more. My dogs are outside 24/7
This has surprised me because he's always been as steady as a rock. He's slept at the fire house with bells, horns and whistles going off. Ive shot over him with long guns and pistols with no reaction. The first time at 12 wks old. He's also loaded into a running helicopter at 12 wks. Never showed any indication of sound sensitivity ever.
