Does anyone do co-own with puppy buyers? I've been on different dog forums for a few years and have seen several people claiming they co-own a dog with the breeder, and I understand what that can entail, but how does a breeder select a person for that kind of relationship? What kind of legalities go into it? I ask because one day I may breed titled/health tested dogs or I may be able to find a dog someone wants me to co-own.
I co-owned two Border terriers with the breeder. We both knew of one another before we met. That made it easier.
I think there has to be a very real trust between the two people. That and all the rules/agreements laid out up front.
One of the agreements I had was that when I titled the dog.s then the title would be turned over to me. I titled both dog in different venues but never felt the need for the title to be totally in my name. They both passed on while still being co-owned. Trust!
How did the two of you meet, Bob? I assume the Border Terrier group is pretty small so it's easy to get to know others. The breeds I'm interested in are fairly popular or gaining popularity quickly.
She had a reputation of being a high level breeder who put multiple titles on all her dogs. I was know for ob training with terriers.
I saw he at a dog show and just walked up and said "I'd like to get a pup out of that bitch". I knew she was going to breed the bitch to her #1 stud, who, at the time was the most titled Border in the history of the breed. Show, ob, tracking, etc.
She looked at me like who the **** are you. I introduced myself and we just clicked.
ALL her pups are co-owned by her until they are titled or neutered.
Now I'm confused.. ...Bob isn't what you described considered 'pink papered'?
I was always told that 'pink papered' is the breeder registering the dog with AKC in the name of the buyer, but not releasing registered breeding rights to that dog until the dog is titled in an agreed venue & the breeder lifts the breed restriction. Meaning that if you breed that dog while 'pink papered' the litter cannot be registered with AKC.
Co-owned is the dog being registered with AKC in both the names of the breeder & the buyer without litter registration restrictions. And that the litter resistrations have to be signed by both owners.
No, "pink papers" refers to the dog being registered with a foreign registry.
When you register a litter with AKC and get the individual puppy registration papers back, the breeder can designate "Limited" registration on each pups individual paperwork. That way when/if the dogs meets the breeders requirements: working titles, show championship, hip rating, ability to tap dance - whatever; the breeder can then contact AKC and lift the "limitation", so the dog has full breeding rights.
